The Maschinenpistole 40, commonly called MP40, is a submachine gun, chambered for Parabellum 9 × 19 mm ammunition. It succeeds MP 38 and MP 38-40. The MP 38 kept its room open, a defect which was corrected with the MP 38-40. The MP 40 is a simplification of the MP 38-40 in order to facilitate its production.
