You know, it's crazy to think that long ago, the Philippines was actually a major rice exporter. Our farmers were renowned for their expertise, and countries from all over the world sent their agricultural specialists to learn from us at the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, Laguna. We were once a powerhouse in rice production, feeding not just ourselves but other nations too.

But here's the thing today, we're actually importing rice from other Asian countries. It's a bit of a humbling reality, isn't it? We're facing a real food security risk, and the price of rice keeps climbing even though we're an agricultural country. It's a situation that needs to change.


So, what can we do about it? Well, I believe that the key lies in rediscovering our agricultural roots. We need to encourage young people to see farming not as a last resort, but as a viable and rewarding career path. We need to invest in modern farming techniques while respecting traditional knowledge. Think about it – sustainable farming practices, using organic fertilizers, and embracing technology like precision agriculture can significantly boost our rice production.


And guess what? We don't need to wait for the government to take the lead. We can all do our part, starting today.

1. Support local farmers: Buy directly from them at farmers' markets. Choose locally grown rice whenever possible.
2. Reduce food waste: Plan your meals, store food properly, and compost food scraps to enrich the soil.
