Yes users can decide which badges are most important to them.
Also the @peak.open team is doing even more things for badges we'll announce soon.

I like these new HP badges, another way to gamify and challenge yourself to get more HP to improve your badge.
Also you don't have to choose 8 badges. You can choose up to 8.
I have only chosen 6 to show up even though I have been given 23 badges
They show up bigger if you choose less. So there's a perk to it.
