I'm not in favor of changing the name, but objectively speaking "Gulf of America" would be more correct. Mexico and the United States are both countries in America.

Changing a name that was agreed on for centuries is just about a certain ego.
Agreed. Then again there are lots of things that were agreed upon for centuries that we seem to be ok with changing. The idea of hundreds of genders comes to mind. It's all about ego.
