Tolerance and Realization

Tolerance and realization go hand in hand. Both are rooted in the idea of equality. In fact, the existence of tolerance and realization is a prerequisite for true equality in any society. In that sense, tolerance cannot be a goal in and of itself. Only when tolerance is universal and protected from threat can it be an end in itself.

As a political discourse
Tolerance and realization are closely related issues in contemporary societies. Both have implications for political and social discourse. The emergence of new forms of communication has altered the character of both.

As a social practice
Social practice and political ideology are often linked to the idea of tolerance. However, the concept of tolerance is often equivocal. For example, tolerance can be a repressive practice when it aims to prevent societal change or to suppress dissent. It is a practice that may actually hinder individuals' ability to achieve happiness.

As a form of conflict resolution
Peer mediation involves two managers from opposing departments coming together to work out a solution to a problem. The goal is to solve the problem without provoking conflict, and peer mediators have to be skilled communicators. Professional mediators, meanwhile, are not affiliated with either department, but are neutral third parties. These mediators are often seen as an asset in conflict resolution. They can provide structure to the process, and help conflicting subordinates see the other person's perspective.

As a virtue
The Gurbani indicates that tolerance is a natural quality. Tolerance is the ability to flow with life without being perturbed by circumstances. A true person does not view their body as a permanent object or a nine-holed structure, but instead recognizes that it is temporary and subject to change.
