Some jobs are essential on holidays and thus don't recognize holidays. This doesn't mean the workers in the category don't deserve some rest during the holiday season, but because without them functioning effectively and efficiently, the society may not cope without them.
Personally, I haven't had to work on holidays in a formal job setting. I have had the privilege to pause and enjoy shared food, fun activities, and stories with my family and friends during the holiday instead. But then, I have one time felt the weight of those essential holiday workers out there on duty while many are resting and celebrating at home.
Of course I acted after observing the sacrifice some of these workers make for the society to keep it running smoothly and save lives. I birthed one of my sons during the holiday season, and a lot of things kept taking me to the hospital those days. Even when the celebration is at its peak, most healthcare workers are out there, the security men, the drivers, the fuel attendants, the emergency workers, and the list continues...
These people keep the society breathing well during the holiday, and aside from the money they get in return, I respect and acknowledge the great roles they play for us.
I observed one particular security person in the hospital I was visiting always on duty. Then I asked him if they don't do shift work with his fellow colleague, but he responded that his colleague has pleaded with him to work on his behalf as he had parties to attend. Maybe he will get double salary or extra cash for accepting that, but I respect the fact that he didn't leave the duty post regardless.
I went home and intentionally prepared food and offered it to the security man the next day for not leaving his post and knowing that he is unable to celebrate with his family within that season. It was just a little way of saying thank you, and I love the smile and joy he felt while he received the food from me.
You see those nurses, doctors, and lab attendants running around to ensure that patients are saved during the holiday; they deserve appreciation. The same thing is applicable to other essential works always on duty during the holiday. I am sure not all of them may sacrifice that, but those essential workers who labor and serve others deserve recognition and appreciation, and maybe you can show them kindness if you can.
After all, that's the real spirit of the holiday.

I think this is a brilliant idea. I could buy a few different $25 gift cards and hold in my purse and should I observe s person working on Christmas eve or Christmas day wish them a Merry Christmas and give a card of their choice and thank them for their service on what should have been and evening they could have spent with those they love.

That's really kind of you as not everyone would think of doing that. People like that should be appreciated even if little as it goes a long way to put smiles on their faces.

All people who work in hospitals deserve respect and admiration, from medical staff to maintenance and security personnel; thanks to them, lives are saved.

I can also understand it. Some people are making making efforts to keep us safe and secure and that's the reason we can stay without any worry and enjoying our life. I think it's one kind of sacrifice doesn't matter if they do it for finance.
