The Art of Conversation

Being the person that I am, I am very big on communication. Over the years, I have grown to learn how to communicate with others in the right way. I wasn’t one to express how I felt most of the time even though there are always exceptions and I soon came to realize that this trait of mine wasn’t going to take me anywhere.

I almost always don’t understand it when people say they don’t know what to say or do. As they say, actions speak louder than words and I believe that our actions say a lot more than we can use our mouth to say. Regardless, we all consider communication to be something that is spoken. Most times we think we are communicating with others when in actual fact we are just talking .

There’s a huge difference between talking and communicating. You can be talking but not communicating. In my point of view, communication mainly has to do with letting the other party actually comprehend what you’re trying to lay across. You don’t just say a few words which are more confusing and expect me to read your mind like I’m a magician. Most of us always tend to assume the other party knows what we are trying to say without hitting the nail right on the head. At this point, I think we all should know that we don’t have magic.

Communication plays a huge part in how our relationships with others are going to go. For example, most African parents are know to always bribe their kids with extra meat or sweets when they offend them instead of talking things out. Even though things are changing now, some of our old folks still do this. Even if you’re the parent, you don’t get to get away with stuff when you’re wrong. You should learn to own up to your mistakes and talk things out with your kids because this action of yours is going to shape your kids in future as they will also learn from you.

Quality conversation is all about getting your point out there clearly and making sure you do it in the right way. Don’t just try to brush things over with a smile or act like nothing happened. Learn to open your mouth and speak up because it is only then that the other party can know what you’re trying to lay across.
