Como comencé mi viaje como voluntaria

¡Hola!

Mientras hablaban, esas personas me decían:

How I started my journey as a volunteer

Hello!

Days ago, while I was buying my breakfast to go to work, for a few moments I traveled back in time. When I was very little, I loved to sit on the porch of my house next to the garden. Many times in that place I came to imagine that I was an amazing scientist; that at some point I could create a tree so big that it could bear delicious fruit for everyone in town.

In that same garden my grandmother taught me to share and help others.

She was an amazing woman, with an infinite imagination and a huge heart. She was a teacher who was always dedicated to teaching and helping others. I remember that many times people of limited means would come to my house to ask about my grandmother. While they were talking, these people would say to me:

"...your grandmother has always been my favorite teacher, when I was little I had a hard time learning math, but since she was my teacher my favorite homework is math..."

"... your grandmother taught me not to lose hope. Every day she passed by my house she always cheered me up with beautiful words..."

That, and more.

Since I was a little girl, my grandmother was the example of how we can change the world around us and that is what I feel I am an ambassador of as well.

Three years ago, while we were living through a pandemic, a group of friends and I were talking about the situation Venezuela was facing. From that simple conversation an idea was born. The four of us who were there had the desire to help those who are not in the best of situations. To offer our hand to others. To try to improve their lives, each one of us doing our bit.

It was a magical moment. We all felt that way.

We decided to make a plan: to collect food for a shelter that was near our homes. As the weeks went by, we received invitations from the Rotaract Cumaná club, inviting us to participate in activities with them. (If you want to know what Rotaract is, let me know in the comments).

In the first activities I met incredible boys and girls. The activities were in vulnerable communities, where the rate of child malnutrition is high. So, together with doctors and nutritionists, we made a nutrition plan that would be carried out once a week, giving them a nutritious lunch.

Then we provided recreational and training spaces for the children and their parents, with the purpose of showing them the alternatives that may exist at the moment of preparing a good meal.

From that moment on, I was delighted with Rotaract, because it helped me to connect with incredible people. I felt a fascinating connection with the past. With my grandmother. I discovered that, as she did, I can also help and make the world a better place.
