Loh #204: Women are Humans too.

Marriage is a union between two people who are ready to learn, share ideas, seek advice and take corrections from each other. The husband as the head of the family is expected to exercise his authority as the leader but with respect to the wife and other members of the family.

The husband instructing the wife to say ‘yes’ or ‘okay’ to everything he says shows his inability to exercise his authority as the head of the family in the appropriate way. This method usually end up in family conflict as the wife will not be happy that she cannot share her thoughts and experience about a thing. Also, the wife will be afraid to share new ideas, discovery and plans with her husband for fear of unknown. This goes further to destroy her self esteem, and her ability to think well and research on different things that can boost her intelligence.

One the other hand, the husband through this instructions will not be able to get new and more ideas about things or projects he plans to embark on. In a case of changing the project plans, he may feel reluctant to tell his wife as it tends to bruise his ego as the man for having a failed strategy for the project. Also, in a case of a failed project, he may not be able to share his worries with his wife who may not only loose trust in him, but always lack the words to comfort him as her ideas and thoughts were not considered before embarking on the project.

There are better ways of coming to a compromise among couple during discussion or argument with both parties equally contributing without the husband instructing to use to always accept whatever decision he makes by saying okay or yes. Discussion between couples should always be about sharing ideas and experience about a thing and coming to a conclusion to as how a thing should be done. As the saying goes “two heads are better than one” and the bible concurs that “two shall chase a thousand”, couples who shares ideas and thoughts, support and contributes to each other's project tends to have great achievement as they will always look out for each other.

Generally, there are proper ways to argue and constructively oppose an idea between couples that will not lead to family conflict. In this case where the husband gives such instructions to the wife, she is supposed to politely explain to the husband why her ideas and thoughts are important in decision making for a better and happy family.
