And the development team wouldn't put faces on something with a bad rep.

I strongly suggest to try to get out some portion of your initial investment, just as a test.

Well, I am still waiting for a proof, that somebody got his money out again. There are enough exit scammers who don´t mind about a bad reputation.

Look for land that is rich in natural resources, phase 2 of the game will let you harvest them.
Just bought a few tiles of a gold mine in Suriname.
