Lycoris Recoil 「リコリス・リコイル」 (2022, 13 episodes)

Surprisingly entertaining, for a story about cheerful high-school girl assassins. Unlike dark, sad and tragic "Gunslinger Girl" (2003), this show is as tragedy-free as possible for such a story. Absurdities of the plot and various clichés aside (e.g. all-powerful computer hackers, etc.), the story is driven by charming personality of supporting character with strong positive attitude and ability to find a good aspect in any misfortune. That contrasts well with serious character of the protagonist.

Action scenes are well balanced with peaceful light comedy scenes from the cafe where main characters are working.

Unfortunately there are many not-so-good or bad things about this show. Various unrealistic nonsense requires a lot of effort for suspension of disbelief. But the worst is the overall setting of the story that happens in contemporary Tokyo that is plagued by frequent irrational terrorist attacks that "government" repeatedly cover-up by reporting shootings and explosions as non-violent accidents, while assassinating alleged perpetrators without due process or prosecution. Relentless lies and lawlessness are accepted by all characters who are not troubled by deception in the slightest, like it is a normal thing. Terrorists are unrealistically portrayed without ideology, political goals, affiliation, etc., like a natural disaster. Propaganda spicing spoils the story a lot, in addition to mediocre script with only few redeeming properties. I'll refrain from nitpicking on everything else that annoyed me in this show -- after all it is a lighthearted James Bond-like entertainment where grotesque sci-fi absurdities are not uncommon.

True peace is a world where the presence of villains is not even felt.
