The Problem of Overpopulation

Overpopulation is usually discussed in the context of regional or world population, but whenever I hear this word, I think about the slum areas that I have been to and worked in. Having worked as a development worker in the most densely populated slum areas of Metro Manila, I can relate to the issue. I have seen families of ten living in a small shanty under the bridge, and hundreds of shanties built on the shores of the pier and beside the railroad tracks. It is easy to see overpopulation on a micro level from this perspective.

If 95% of the population live on 10% of the worlds land, then either we really have a problem or... I guess land is not the problem because only 10% is over-utilized. I also don't think that the number of people is the problem at this point in time since there is still a buffer of places that can be utilized. Well, I guess it's not a simple problem after all, so a yes and no answer might not suffice. What I mean by this is that it really depends on how we contextualize everything because there are other factors involved in this issue.

Too many people or is the land too small?

Focusing on the land factor, we already know that most of the world's land is owned by a the super rich families and the giant multinationals. It will be a problem getting them to "give-up" their ownership and redistribute it to the majority who do not own any land at all. On the other hand, limiting the number of children with a hard cap might not do it also. China did it, but at what price? I believe that if we go this route, that it should be a more lenient way with more social support and educating the public about it. Limiting the number of births might create an imbalance in the demographics of the population where there can be, possibly, be only one (1) child supporting his parents and grandparents. That alone is a 1:6 ratio. Add another mouth to feed, if he or she, chose to have one child also and the ratio becomes 1:7. If he or she has a spouse, then that ratio becomes 2:7. If the great grandparents lived a healthy life, then that adds another one to eight mouths to feed, which isn't a problem with a healthy economy and progressive social security system in place, but how many countries have that. Not every country has the Norweigan Government Pension Fund at their disposal.

Food and other resources

Jumping on to another facet of this problem is the food problem. Well at least we see it as a problem because a large population might not be easily fed if we consume food the way we do today. I mean, I am biased, but the statistics and research can easily be found. Eating a predominantly #plant-based diet will have a significant effect on food production and in feeding the world's hungry population. And it's just a matter of time before we really need to go plant-based if we want an efficient, sustainable way to use our land in producing food. This can also positively impact climate change, pollution, and health. I'm not saying that this is the cure-all of the world's population issue, but going #plant-based might be the easiest way for us to have an impact on the issue of food shortage, climate crisis, and health on a personal level.

To end, my solution to the issue of overpopulation is not an authoritarian one. We should encourage couples to have fewer children and to balance it with their capacity to provide for their children. It must be practical that ordinary people can easily understand it. It should solve a problem that they are familiar with, and educate them on the issue.

Governments can also give "rewards" and extra points for people with fewer children. Give tax incentives to people who have fewer children. This will encourage tax-payers to give it due consideration.

Given the current situation, it would be noteworthy to emphasize spacing between children, which is not only a population control component, but also good for the mother; to regain her health from pregnancy and childbirth, to take care of the baby, and to plan the next pregnancy.

That's it for now. Thanks for dropping by.

Love and peace!

I agree with some of the points you make. I also think it is a problem of awareness and consideration by the parties.

For sure, there is a lack of awareness and consideration in this issue. It will make a big difference if we can get it out there, to let people know that there are things that can be done on a personal level, and that what they do will greatly matter in the bigger scheme of things.

Nicely written, all the facts you mentioned are just real and what the whole is faced with today. Some people, culture, population still think that when they don't reproduce its a taboo and that's where education system comes in. Education is really need.

I enjoyed reading your post! Well done and thank you for participating in the QOTW!

Thanks for the lovely feedback, @esther-emmanuel. I really thought that all of us need to understand it deeply and with the understanding that it is for the greater good. I'm glad that you enjoyed reading my post, I am happy to participate. !PIZZA

You just brought up another point that drives mine home.

Redistribution.

Its not about having less kids, its about moving towards where there is an abundance of time and space.

There are empty castles all over europe, I bet those kids in manilla who are living 10 to a room would love the opportunity to bring them back to life.

Hey, @metzli . Redistribution is one of the things that can potentially have a big impact on this issue. I get it. I also know about those castles in Europe, but have not really connected it with this issue. Hmmm.. Thanks for bringing it up, I now see the inequitable distribution of wealth even more. It is really a great divide. Thanks for the insightful comment.

Thanks, @bdcommunity . !PIZZA for you.

Food and other social amenities are the key things that determines whether a place is overpopulated. Lands are available and can never be used all, God owns nature(land, water...)
I like your post as you noted about key important things based on the context once seem to be convinced of

Yes, God provided everything to us, @danladi. Glad you liked my post. !PIZZA

This is absolutely brilliant, I had many thoughts Reading through. I could easily relate with your advice and opinion.

Like you said, it shouldn't be an authoritarian one but it should be a sort of advice to the public and also that part of government giving incentive is a really nice suggestion.

It was nice reading from you, nice to meet you🥰🥰.

Thank you very much, @hopestylist . Glad you were able to relate with the blog post. It's a big mess so everyone needs to step up. And because of this we no longer have the luxury of just discussions and debates, but solid actions from all stakeholders. Our future literally depends on it.

Thanks for dropping by and reading my blog post. See you around. 😊

Yeah, it was a pleasure reading through, you're welcome dear.
See you around too 🥰🥰.

I think you’ve argued your point well, and, yes, education is by far our most valuable asset. Education is far better than “Chinese-type” birth control, all this authoritarian law created was an explosion of male children and an increase in the abortion of female children. Moving to a plant-based diet is also something that requires education and I do believe that this type of diet will assist in alleviating the problem. Nice article. Thanks for posting in the EcoTrain community.

Hey, @itsostylish . I couldn't agree with you more. It will really mess up the population if a super strict population control measure were to be implemented. Education really is the key to this issue. !PIZZA

yes, plant based diets and also the full use of our resources.

Let's keep the pigs cause somebody needs to eat the parts of the plants we don't eat, but let's keep less of them, in better conditions.

I !LUV your comment. I'm not against keeping pigs, or any other animal. Babe is one of my favorite movies after all. 😂

Very interesting post and beautifully written. Yes, parents should be educated on overpopulation and they should be made to know fewer children and the capacity to work and take care of them will save them from any issue that may arise due to overpopulation.

Also, government should be considerate in the payment of tax especially for families who are large compared to the ones with few or less children. Thank you for sharing.

Hello, @princessbusayo . Thanks for dropping by. Always nice to read your comments. It is a good starting point to start to people about it. Having articles written about it and shared on the internet helps as much to get the search engines to notice this issue too. !PIZZA

Exactly! People need to be aware of such issue and I hope steps should be taken to eradicate overpopulation on earth too.
You are welcome 🙂

I agree. 😁😁😁

Interesting point of view. It made me Google pop statistics around the world. I found that our numbers are growing, but the rate has steadily declined. Some countries like Japan, are in the negatives. Would PH fall below zero someday, too?

Right, there's plenty of land resources that are mismanaged or underutilized. To add to your point, I hope our LGUs will also educate and promote urban farming. And make it more accessible and actively support it.

Personally, I think that the population issue here in the Philippines had not been handled well by the authorities in-charge. Age-appropriate education must really be taken into consideration. A couple of years back, I was shocked that condoms were being given out to community clinics by a non-profit. Not that I'm against the use of condoms, but the way it was handled was really shabby and might have "aroused" the curiosity of the kids more than educating them when teenage pregnancies shot up after implementing the program. Urban farming is beginning to take off in some places now but we are not yet there. 😁

!PIZZA

Story of PH lol. I get what you mean about how people in-charge are so thoughtless most of the time.

But yes, there's still hope. People's mindsets are gradually changing. Many Pinoys are taking measures to be more self-sufficient, like with urban farming; and becoming more environmentally-aware, financially literate, health-conscious, etc.

I agree. I noticed that many Pinoy bloggers here on Hive have a more progressive view of reality and how we can improve the situation we are in. Before it was really difficult to educate the youth on the environment, financial literacy, and health. Now, they are discovering it by themselves. Hopeful talaga ang ipinapakita ng next generation. Just need to point them in the right direction.
