EN - Environmental Becoming.jpg

This is my response to @EcoTrain's QotW about what I feel we could do differently as individuals and as a species to face and revert the effects of climate change on our planet. I mentioned this topic specifically in my last post, where I talked about faith and how important it is to question our beliefs if we're truly going for a sustainable, holistic, balanced lifestyle, because the state of our outer environment is the mirror of our inner garden.

Storms, wildfires, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, landslides and volcanic eruptions are expressions of imbalances in the planet's elemental composition, which could be equated to emotional and physical imbalances in a person's body and mind, that is, infections, diseases, wounds, traumas, mental health conditions, personal terrors, unresolved sorrows and other forms of physical, psychological and spiritual distress, but at an individual level. Corruption, crime, war, infrastructural decay, abuse, oppression, censorship and, of course, pollution, are also translations of these issues at a social and civilizational scale. We're cells in the body of humanity and connected to every lifeform and space in the world; if one of us is ill, the entirety of humanity, and this orb on which we exist, are weakened.

I think that one of the first things that we need to shift is our perspective of the situation. Climate change may very well be an existential threat, if not to our species as a whole, at least to our way of life, but I don't think it's a threat to the planet. In fact, it's like the earth's immune response, a way of healing the imbalances, like fever to fight off and integrate a virus, or pain that reveals internal malfunctions. While it's true that this is a monster of our own making and it's up to us to try and reduce its detrimental effect, we're just animals. No matter how hard we try to convince ourselves of the opposite, we're prone to the same instincts, the same fight or flight responses, the same need for survival as a tiger or a deer. We give a lot of import to ourselves, but we're ruled by unconscious drives which constitute the origin of these issues, because we're born with a set of attributes that make us both uniquely creative and also uniquely destructive.

The difference between us and the rest of the animals is that we can choose to delve deeper into ourselves and imagine new things, so this is another aspect that we should review and change when needed: What are we manifesting? How do we use our abilities? We're in this world to increase order and preserve beauty, but are we? This is something that we should all ponder carefully. If I ceased to exist today, would the world be lessened by my absence or would it thrive? Harsh question. Are we really as noble and innocent as we think we are, when our clothing and phones are made in sweatshops in Asia? When the components of our computers are made with minerals extracted by modern slaves in Africa or South America?

In order to reduce the deleterious impact of climate change, we must observe the energy that we're emitting. Pollution isn't just the CO2 of industries, the infested landfills and the noise of busy highways, it's also everyday complaints, falsehoods, aggression, the things we do against one another and against ourselves. Planet-wide actions must be carried out by consortiums of humans, but we can contribute from our own personal corners by keeping our language clear of vulgarities and insults, our minds free from prejudice, our homes clean and orderly, our bodies healthy and our hearts happy. We can also question our stances, resort to better sources of information and open our views to empathy and honest communication. Sure, we could go to a beach and clean it up, or plant trees, or protest against corporate abuse, but if we return home to mindlessly watch TV for hours, mistreat our pets, scream at our partners and rant about our workplace, we're literally undoing with our feet what we've done with our hands.

In sum, if we're serious about protecting and enriching our global environment, we must work on our immediate, everyday surroundings and connections. If we improve the way we relate to ourselves, we improve everything else. It might not seem as useful as nations renouncing oil and embracing renewable energy, or as far reaching as corporations reducing their carbon footprint, but it's actually the most expansive thing that we can do, absolutely indispensable for any of those things to happen, because nations and corporations are made out of human beings, and when we trespass on others (mostly unknowingly) or fail to cooperate, we delay and even revert the evolution of any effective planning; if each of us gets better at loving and creating, at thanking and respecting our societies instead of constantly seeking flaws, we'll certainly be able to not only manage climate change and allow the transformation to happen, but also evolve through it ourselves as a collective.

Rebirth. Something that was considered extinct reemerges with amazing strength. The words of the sages are verified before the world and can no longer be ignored. All transcendence has a terrible aspect, when the chrysalis opens, a new world demands the admission of our senses; change is unstoppable, we must adapt. Recognize yourself as a participant, member of a whole; your actions affect your environment and your environment answers you. What does it say? The multitudes rise like tides and mountains, their voices rumble and cannot be suppressed. Reality erupts with roars and portents, believe in what is happening, there is no time for elaborate theories or skepticism, every attempt to conceal the truth fails disastrously. Prepare yourself, you will see great misery and beauty, the choice between concert and stridency belongs to you.

It’s true that if we don’t keep our own “house” in order, we can do very little to improve the planet and reduce the effects of Climate Change. I think that your views are interesting and that we need to have a clean home, head and life before we move forward and tackle the bigger issues. Thank you for posting in the EcoTrain

Thank you for the comment and the support!

Sure, we could go to a beach and clean it up, or plant trees, or protest against corporate abuse, but if we return home to mindlessly watch TV for hours, mistreat our pets, scream at our partners and rant about our workplace, we're literally undoing with our feet what we've done with our hands.

These are the kind of thoughts that drove me crazy growing up. Nowadays obviously I’m working on re-contextualizing everything, but being the only one around me from maybe 6-15 years old and then being told I’m the one with a disorder…

I’m glad to see that there are more people questioning these things, I feel like 10 years ago you’d be met with only blank stares but now it’s completely different. It might be a minority but even if it is, it’s a very large minority that would be willing to listen to ideas like this, even if we only reach a few at a time.

I'm also happy to be able to express these opinions in a public context, it feels refreshing. And yes, I absolutely think that the minority is growing too, but I understand why it's not as fast-paced as we'd like, it's really difficult to questions these things for the same reason that I mentioned in my reply to your other comment: the assumptions provide security.

You've addressed this beautifully.

Pollution isn't just the CO2 of industries, the infested landfills and the noise of busy highways, it's also everyday complaints, falsehoods, aggression, the things we do against one another and against ourselves.

This absolutely rings true. I feel like we've come to a stage where the climate movement is being polluted by aggression and it doesn't matter what you personally do you can get derided for it not being enough. Each person you encounter has their biggest priority that they go all out on and if you don't meet their expectations then you're not up to scratch. Then when you have different people pushing each of their own priorities, there's no way you can reach all of them short of removing yourself from the planet.

I've recently started trying to remove myself from the arguments of what is the best way forward and find my own path, because everyone's journey is their own and if we can't accept that in the knowledge that we are all still trying to move towards the same goal then we're either contributing to the aggression or we're beating ourselves down into worthlessness (I tend to do the latter). Never before have I felt like there is an undertone constantly telling us that we don't deserve anything in this world. There is often this voice in my mind shouting "you can't have that" to the tune of a character I once saw on an episode of Two and a Half Men. 😅

Thank you for your awesome comment! I agree entirely, a lot of people are out to push their own agenda and only like to spend their time and invest their resources on people who think or can be swayed to think like them. It's what brought us to this mess. I know I've been guilty of that myself before.

That last part resonated strongly with me, I've been having a bit of a hard time allowing myself to receive rewards for my effort, to feel that I deserve my gains. That voice in my mind telling me that I can't have nice things is so subtle and buried so deep that only now I'm perceiving it for what it is, fear of notoriety, of giving too much power to my ego and losing myself in vanity, devolving to that Javier who imposed his views on others.

Funny, it's precisely that fear which would secure such an outcome, I think. Once again, thank you and bless you!

I find it hard to imagine that you were ever like that and have a lot of respect for you that you were able to recognise it in yourself and change. That said, I believe it is not uncommon to think that way in youth, wisdom only comes with experience and some may never gain broad enough experiences in life to even see a need to change from a narrow viewpoint of the world.

I agree with your points but this one caught my attention-

While it's true that this is a monster of our own making and it's up to us to try and reduce its detrimental effect, we're just animals.

We all should do our efforts to reduce carbon from the atmosphere. Thank you!
