Second to last day at work today and as I was leaving the museum, wondering how I was going to spend my newfound free time, I came across these micro open spaces, these gaps between the concrete slabs. These were completely green, full of plants and Nature, ready to colonise other gaps, present or future.
To tell you an anecdote, the second novel I wrote is based on the postulate that in our current societies, it is only in the interstices that it is truly possible to live in freedom. And it is from these spaces that we can reclaim, through common sense, the neglected parts of our cultures...
The story is that of a socially and materially well-to-do person who suddenly becomes aware of his position as a dominant and ultimately rather bad person. If I tell you that from the very first pages, this protagonist becomes a hermit, I think you won't be surprised ^^ !
As well as wondering how I was going to use my free time, seeing these populated gaps, I was thinking about our house project and leaving the city. The idea is to become even more autonomous and to stop making preserves with vegetables we buy, but rather with those we grow in organically in permaculture ! That would be more concrete and realistic...
Our project is progressing little by little, but the criteria remain the same :
- A fairly large plot of land.
- If possible far from the nuisance of monoculture fields (that's not easy). And others eventual ones...
- ... especially if we want to be close to a station.
And that's when you realize that it's above all on the house that we ask ourselves questions, both less and less... and paradoxically, the more the project progresses, more and more !
- How much living space do we really need? 60? or 120? (I already know the answer, it's somewhere in between ;-)
- Should we "settle" for a village house with a much smaller garden and skip out on a possible orchard and other amenities?
- Wouldn't one idea be to build rather than renovate a house that looks good but could be a money pit ?
Some time ago, we went to visit this house above, here is the link of the article which inaugurates my reflections here about it...
It was really perfect to make this first visit and it enlightened us on what we really wanted, in any case, to tighten the project, average of our desires and our needs...
Some time ago, I had discovered @bigorna1's project (below) and I must say that I was very impressed by it! A self-built wooden house in the hills of Portugal. You can find everything in detail here, it's really worth it :)
As I happen to be a woodworker (too) it's really something that speaks to me and it got me thinking... For the moment, my girlfriend doesn't seem to be too keen on this prospect, but if I put together a good file, I might be able to show her some advantages of following a different path, the path of wooden construction, which might be cheaper, which remains to be seen if you take into account the purchase of the land, the materials and the labour (and yes, not a bricklayer yet !)
As you can see, this is taking time, more than I would have thought a few years ago and more than I am used to with my other projects !
I would be delighted and curious to hear your stories, memories, ideas, advice and impressions related to this subject of housing! What do you think about it ?
I hope you enjoy this article and that it makes you think, as I am doing myself, warming up my brain before going to bed !
Thanks for reading, looking forward to reading your responses :)
Take care of yourself and your loved ones <3
Thank you for the mention. it is so beautiful to know my personal life project inspire others.
I agree so much about what you write above. while the distractions in a city keep you totally disconnected, life on a farm, surrounded and immersed in nature, unleashing its potential of abundance is by far the way to go. there is a before and an after, and there is no going back.
we all have our circumstances and rythms and it takes this process you are going through to get there.
when my son was born, we lived in a rented flat in Mallorca. I immediately knew I wanted something else for him to grow up in. this was the seed. it still took another two and a half years until the day I got off the ferry in Valencia and started the long drive across the Peninsula toward Portugal in a car loaded to the brim with what we took along with us.
enjoy this journey, this is the guaranteed beginning of something beautiful !
You’re welcome :) Thanks again !
I feel close about your saying too, I think the main reason why we don’t have children is the fact we’re still leaving in city, and it might be different if we lived in a smaller one !
Each day I’m really more convinced about the reasons to leave and every day, my list is growing ^^ !
Thanks you again, I hope you and your family is doing well 🤞🏼 Take care
Also, I like the idea of using wood, it is sustainable and can be re-used when priorities changes.
On building a house, either you make final blueprint or make it modular.
When my house was built in my hometown, I was away 98% of the time. When I came home it looked so different, I was angry. Maybe the next time, I should be 100% present.
Good luck on your future plans and future house!
Hey @oniemaniego :)
Sure, wood seems appropriate, and if we do built, this would probably the main material !
I think a part could be final and the rest more modular...
Haha, you'd better, this is really important !!
Thanks you for your encouragement dear and sorry for this late answer !
Have a sweet weekend, I hope you're doing good 🤞
So great to stumble upon your thoughts here about housing @anttn 🤓😎
Those are exactly the same wishes we have and questions regarding housing.
You are a woodworker too. Me too… hahaha I studied engineering and could build a house from scratch. Hands on. Very cool.
We would like land and a garden far from all. But still close to public transport or at least a shop and restaurant. But that is hard to find a location like you say. Especially when the “in what country” part isn’t clear at the moment for us. Hehehe
Have you looked into earth ships?
A wooden house would be better than renovating an older one. It also depends on which climate you are in. As new you put in all you want and is needed. And old house can be a money pit.
At this moment we don’t know our choice yet. But we know we move out of Spain.
Great to see what you will choose and the direction your path will take.
Have a lovely last day 👋🏻😁
Yeah, this is really difficult to make wishes and needs matching !!
Yeah, indeed ! It would work for me, but my companion is too picky haha ..!
The more I think, the more I’m convinced that a little wood house one a little land would be really enough if close to the wild !
Thanks you dear, take care and have a very pleasant evening 😘
Yep, it’s difficult. Finding the right spot and combine those 2.
A wooden house does sounds lovely in many ways.
An Earth ship would be my first choice, maybe I build one, one day 🙂 depending on the country I end up and what is allowed.
Nature is high on the list too like you have. We need it more in our lives…
You are so welcome, you have a wonderful evening too 😘
The building restrictions are drastic here in France, it is not the best country for this type of project... But it's going to be complicated to do otherwise for us haha !
Can't wait to see all these projects come out of the ground and take shape !
😘
I can imagine @anttn… some countries are crazy tough, restrictions wise.
I only have personal experience in the Netherlands with them. While I worked as a draftsman (woman)
But I watch building programs/ documentaries from other countries. They are great to get a glimpse behind the scenes there. Building from scratch or renovation projects. Just cool to see.
I think I have many things I like… subject wise.
Have a great day my friend. 👋🏻😘
Ah ...

Your plans are amazing and everybody is wanting a life like this🙌🙌🙌 and you started building it. It really does take time but i hope you'll finish it👍👍
Thanks you for your encouragement, but you’re not talking about the wood house, no ? Because this one is not mine :)
Have a good day ✌🏼
People start with a vision for the future, a blueprint for their success and it is an important process. Perhaps i meant that because you state your plans, sorry for the confusion
haha, no problem, I think the confusion may be on my side :)
It is indeed essential to make plans, it keeps you going !
Have a good weekend

Hi, Anttn now I know why you bought a house building book.at Friday market.
You can buy our house in India😂😂 it is a real dream house (not wooden) surrounded by nature but there are restrictions no foreigner is allowed to buy a house with agricultural land. 🤔good luck with your new project greetings🙏😊
