The Launch of o3 and o3-mini

Alongside o3, OpenAI introduced a lighter version called o3-mini, catering to users who might require a more accessible and resource-efficient AI model. While neither version is currently available to the public, OpenAI plans to release the mini version by the end of January 2025.

Interestingly, the name "o3" was chosen to avoid trademark conflicts, as the name "o2" is owned by a British telecommunications company. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, humorously addressed the topic during the announcement, stating that the company preferred to skip sequential naming to avoid legal issues.

A New Era of Reasoning Models
OpenAI describes o3 as part of a new generation of "reasoning models." These models are engineered to perform fact-checking, avoid logical pitfalls, and solve intricate problems with precision. In internal tests, o3 demonstrated superior performance in areas such as physics, science, and mathematics, surpassing the capabilities of its predecessor, o1.
