Free Will As Metaphysics

in Deep Dives2 years ago (edited)

Tacking onto my last post on comprehensive freedom- lets explore a particular aspect of what this looks like. Freedom as a subject in metaphysics, which is really just a technical term for first principle base assumptions.

The person creating this explainer tries to say at the outset, in much like the same manner that the woman from reason mag did in my last post, that you really can separate this kind of metaphysical position on free-will from a political position of this type. Again, I would suggest this requires significant concession - although you can make the claim that people doing wrong is a necessary part of free-will, I think one always ends up in an ultimately incoherent place when taking that tactic. ( Wrong meaning here in the sense of intellectually confused ,say about a religious position). It took my years to dig out of this hole in the ground intellectually - it is one thing to recognize there is an incongruity - quite another to have something even approaching a detailed alternative path.

If you are trying to have a freedom based position in some kind of holistic way I think having this type of more free-will metaphysics as a baseline is an important starting place - being on the deterministic side of the spectrum tends to become an issue.
