Reading is part of the building blocks for learning!

The start of a new school year is always a huge challenge. New students don't know how to work the system or how to download their E-books, and it turns into a never ending saga of repetitive explaining of the same thing over and over again. Kids don't listen properly and then the biggest problem of all! Kids don't read, and if they do, they don't read with comprehension.

This is a major issue in schools today and it needs a proper address in schools. Parents and teachers both need to take responsibility.

It is high time that reading takes priority because it gives students the basic building blocks of life. If you can read, you can study anything.

There are so many things that can be done to improve reading and it needs to start at home:

  1. Read stories to your children before they go to sleep.

  2. Find out what their interests are and buy books that they find interesting.

  3. Read them a part of a story and ask them questions about what you have read.

  4. Write sentences on pieces of paper and let the child put it in the correct sequence.

  5. Download some free reading apps to improve reading speed and make a game out of reading.

  6. Make reading as much fun as possible!

The problem i have with this Gen Z era is that the reading culture will die entirely in their time. They hardly pay attention to anything that has to do with reading. I am a teacher too and can attest to this. I wailed heavily in my heart at their horrendous performance in my subject. It made me feel like i wasn't doing a great job in my profession. All the same i pray they can fall back to their books. I try each day to rally them to pay more attention to their books, but my cries always on deaf ears.
