Comprehension worksheet, an information retention/assimilation strategy for learners.

in Education5 years ago

Hello there, welcome to my blog, it such a rare privilege to be given an opportunity through this platform to share useful information which I guess would contribute to knowledge.

A lot has been said about comprehension and how it could help the learners assimilate as well as retain information. Today, I will be toeing same path but with much effort to make this learning a reality than a mere abstract so as to address this issue once and for all.

To aid proper understanding of this lesson as well as ensure that learners know how to tackle a comprehension worksheet, I think that it would be pertinent for learners to have an overview or background information of what is required of them. Hence, every learner must as a matter of fact first understand the following:

What is comprehension?

The word comprehension is a noun which is a naming word. It denotes understanding, i.e ability to understand. It is derived or rather formed from the word comprehend which is a verb that means to understand something fully.
Drawing from this definition, I can vividly state here that the essence of any comprehension worksheet is for the reader (which in this case is the learner) to understand the information which the writer is passing.

How can a learner comprehend?

This is the nucleus of comprehension worksheet and reason must learners shy away from attempting a comprehension worksheet. There are a few but many factors that aids or hampers learner's comprehension of information inherent in the worksheet.
For the purpose of this write-up, I would only pay a quick attention to few factors that could aid a learner's comprehension of worksheet as well as share few tips for answering the comprehension.

Step 1.Have a background information about the comprehension passage:

A reader (learner) ought to have a background information about the comprehension worksheet. He should know the subject matter of the reading comprehension. This will give him or her a clue to what the question is.

Step 2.Scan through the questions before you commence reading:

This point sometimes raises some bond of contention as to whether the reader needs to read questions first or read the worksheet. Well, there is no big deal or point to argue over. Thus to me I always go through the questions first. Know why? Going through the question helps build up (widen) my retention capacity. This is so because I read with expectation; looking out on each sentence or paragraph for the possible answers to the questions I already have in mind
But you must note however that this strategy if it's new to you, can slow down your reading speed and make you have a bias mind about the passage. So take my advice, ignore this point. It works always for me though and so far it's my best strategy.

Step 3. Underline the paragraphs or sentences that contains the answers to the reading comprehension.

While reading the comprehension passage, a good (reader) who has the question already at the subconscious mind, would always take note of the words, sentences, lines and paragraphs that contains the answers to the comprehension. Do you know why you need to indicate those stuff while reading? It would save you the stress of going through step four which is re-reading the comprehension passage.
You should be careful too and ask the examiner for his opinion before writing on your question paper least it should earn you troubles like loss of mark or outright cancellation of scores. Be wise and do not fall a victim.

Sequel to the long held saying that too much of anything will lead to something or everything, I will plead your indulgence that I'd chose to pause here.
