[ENG/ESP] Let's talk about: "The Witness" /Hablemos de: "El Testigo".

I've been in the mood for movies lately, thriller movies specifically. and as I watched some films I remembered my all-time favorites and I wanted to share it you.

I have never been a fan of horror/gore films with ghosts and such (it makes sleeping hard for me!), but I quite enjoy thriller movies. Those type of movies where you're at the edge of your sit, biting your nails, uncappable of looking somewhere else, and as coincidental as it is, my favorite thriller movies are all Korean. (They have mastered this genre, really)so today, I'm going to talk about "The Witness".

THE WITNESS

Realeased in 2018, Directed by Kyu-Jang Cho and starring Lee Sungmin as protagonist, this movie narrates the story of Sanghoon, an ordinary office worker who lives in a apartment complex with his family, that one night after drinking with his colleagues he witnesses a murder just outside his home.

Despite being a witness, a total key in the investigation of the murder, for his and his family's safety, Sanghoon decides to pretend that he knows nothing and hasn't seen anything, but... The murderer had saw him in the balcony and soon begins an almost endless game of hide and seek, between our protagonist and the murderer filled with paranoia, delusions and pretty much suspense.

My review: 3.5/5.

When it comes to casting and execution this movies just fills all the blanks. All characters were well played and actor Sungmin does a really well job expressing his paranoia, his frustrations and his fear. The supporting actors really do a good job as well, and personally I think that sometimes in the film, actor Kim Sangho steals the show from our Lead Sungmin.

All the scenery is really good, and the editing + soundtrack just adds for it to be a very intriguing movie. I think it's a great idea to use an apartment complex to be the main location, because it makes you feel sorry somehow about the lead for being the "only one" who witnessed a crime (later in the film we know that he wasn't the only one, he's not that unlucky"

Even tho I can assure the plot is very well handled, I agree with other opinions about this movie that it feels like the whole film is divided in three parts, the first one being utterly nerve-wracking, the second more dynamic, and the last one (towards the finale) feels somehow lacking. This movie follows a very fast tempo, and you have one thing coming after the other, so even when the stress and suspense feels long, it comes to the resolution very fast.

During the whole film, and mostly towards the end, I couldn't understand Sanghoon's behavior or reasoning, most of the time I was angry or frustrated with everything he was doing and almost wished the killer would find him just because I was angry with the way he was acting. And after some analysis, I came to the conclusion that I was angry at him because I felt he was extremely selfish, and that maybe me in that position would have helped from the beginning.

When watching it once again to write this review, I still felt angry at him, but I could understand him more and thought that maybe if I was in that position, I wouldn't had it easy to decide whether to help the police saying I'm a witness or no. It's a thing that's easier said that done, it's easy to think you could play hero in front of your tv, but in reality many people would just assume that others can help too, so they don't do it.

So I think it's a nice plot to explore in this film.

Últimamente he tenido ganas de ver películas (soy más de series, con honestidad), películas de suspenso para ser especificos. Y mientras veía algunas películas me he acordado de mis favoritas y quería compartirlas con ustedes.

Nunca he sido fan de las películas de terror/gore con fantasmas y demás (¡me cuesta dormir!), pero disfruto bastante de las películas de suspenso. Ese tipo de películas en las que estás al borde de tu asiento, mordiéndote las uñas, sin poder mirar a otro lado, y por pura casualidad, mis películas de suspenso favoritas son todas coreanas. (Corea ha dominado este género, de verdad).

Así que no te entretengo más. Empecemos.

Estrenada en 2018, dirigida por Kyu-Jang Cho y protagonizada por Lee Sungmin, esta película narra la historia de Sanghoon, un oficinista normal y corriente que vive en un complejo de apartamentos con su familia, y que una noche después de beber con sus compañeros es testigo de un asesinato a las afueras de su casa.

A pesar de ser un testigo clave en la investigación del asesinato, por su seguridad y la de su familia, Sanghoon decide fingir que no sabe nada y que no ha visto nada, pero... El asesino le ha visto en el balcón y pronto comienza un juego casi interminable de gato y ratón, entre el protagonista y el asesino lleno de paranoia, delirios y bastante suspenso.

En lo que respecta al reparto y la ejecución, esta película cumple con todos los requisitos. Todos los personajes fueron bien interpretados y el actor Sungmin hace un muy buen trabajo expresando su paranoia, sus frustraciones y su miedo. Los actores secundarios también hacen un buen trabajo, y personalmente creo que a veces en la película, el actor Kim Sangho le roba el protagonismo a nuestro protagonista Sungmin.

Toda la escenografía es realmente buena, y el montaje + la banda sonora sólo añaden para que sea una película muy intrigante. Creo que es una gran idea usar un complejo de apartamentos como localización principal, porque te hace sentir de alguna manera pena por el protagonista por ser el "único" que presenció un crimen (más tarde en la película sabemos que no fue el único, no tiene tan mala suerte".

Aunque puedo asegurar que la trama está muy bien llevada, coincido con otras opiniones sobre esta película en que da la sensación de que toda la película está dividida en tres partes, la primera totalmente angustiosa, la segunda más dinámica, y la última (hacia el final) se siente de alguna manera carente. Esta película sigue un ritmo muy rápido, y tiene una cosa tras otra, así que incluso cuando la tensión y el suspense se sienten largos, se llega a la resolución muy rápido.

Durante toda la película, y sobre todo hacia el final, no podía entender el comportamiento o el razonamiento de Sanghoon, la mayor parte del tiempo estaba enfadado o frustrado con todo lo que hacía y casi deseaba que el asesino lo encontrara sólo porque estaba enfadado con su forma de actuar. Y después de analizarlo, llegué a la conclusión de que me enfadaba con él porque me parecía que era extremadamente egoísta, y que quizás yo en esa posición habría ayudado desde el principio.

Al volver a verla para escribir esta crítica, seguía sintiéndome enfadada con él, pero podía entenderle más y pensaba que quizás si yo estuviera en esa posición, no me resultaría fácil decidir si ayudar a la policía diciendo que soy un testigo o no. Es una cosa que es más fácil de decir que de hacer, es fácil pensar que puedes jugar a ser un héroe delante de tu televisor, pero en realidad mucha gente asumiría que los demás también pueden ayudar, así que no lo hacen.

Así que creo que es un buen argumento para explorar en esta película.
