We Live In Time

I watched We Live In Time so you don’t have to (or maybe so you should)

The movie follows Tobias and Almut’s relationship through three different points in time: one before they meet, one during their relationship, and one after the devastating diagnosis. The transitions between these timestamps were smooth enough, without tiring the audience.

Andrew Garfield got me to the cinema, but Florence Pugh kept me there. Honestly, as a super fan of Andrew, I didn’t expect him to be outshined in a movie, but lo and behold, that day has come. Don’t get me wrong, both were excellent, but this was Florence’s movie. Garfield had his moments, but he mostly played the role we've come to expect from him: the incredibly loving husband who stammers a bit whenever he's trying to say all those nice things at once.

I can't quite put my finger on it yet since it’s still fresh in my mind, but from the midpoint of the film onward, I felt like something was missing. Also, nothing unexpected happened. The film leaned heavily into clichés—whether accidentally or, worse, deliberately. I can’t recall a single moment that surprised me.

That said, it still accomplished what it set out to do. The couple was convincing and natural, and the romance never felt forced. Their chemistry kept me glued to the screen. If they didn’t work well together, it would’ve been a tough watch, especially since they dominate about 95% of the screen time. If you went to this movie hoping to discover new actors, sorry, no luck.

If you like emotional movies with a touch of romance, I’d recommend this without hesitation. If you want to spend two hours in the cinema and have a good cry afterward, I’d also recommend it. But for anyone else, the movie might come off as a bit dull and predictable. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was. I don’t think I’d watch it again, but for what it’s supposed to be, it did an excellent job.

Sort:

Yeah, exactly recommendation. I do love a good romance film, non-cheesy, and you're guaranteed to have a good cry afterwards. Nicely done. Added to the watchlist!
