Movie Review: No Way Up

After spending hours reading, I needed to unwind. I needed something that'd ease my nerves and relax the tension in my mind. Of course, the best way for me to do this is to watch a movie or play chess. Usually, anime is my go-to, but I wanted something different. I opened Moviebox and started surfing to see what movie to watch. Then, out of the blue, my eyes landed on a movie, “No way up.” I got interested in the movie after reading its description. I mean, who doesn't like shark movies? After watching shark movies like The Meg 1 and 2, I had an intuition that this one was going to be so good, so I proceeded to download it. I got my favorite snack- Fab biscuits and a drink to grab that cinematic experience. Little did I know that the movie had a lot in store for me. Maybe too much?

Of all the shark movies I have seen in my entire life, this should rank at the bottom of the list. After reading the movie description, I got the idea that this movie would be about sharks, so I was expecting a close-to-horror cinematic experience. Interestingly, I was surprised by a storyline that fell way below par.

The plot opens with Ava (Sophie Mclntosh) and her boyfriend Jed (Jeremias Amoore). The two, along with their best friend Kyle, board a plane. At the beginning of the flight, Kyle notices that the plane is old and the engines are a bit rusty, he tries to tell the others, but no one takes him seriously. About 10 minutes into the flight, the engine gets cooked, and the plane crashes into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The survivors; Ava and her boyfriend, Jed, Kyle, their bodyguard, Brandon, a frightened young girl, an old woman, and a flight attendant- must struggle to get out of the plane before they run out of oxygen. However, they find it almost impossible due to the other parts of the plane being submerged underwater, surrounded by sharks. The plot revolves around these characters and their experiences underwater.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE MOVIE

As I mentioned above, of all the shark movies I've seen in my life, this one fits perfectly at the bottom. It didn't help me unwind, it only got me pissed. The only thing I enjoyed was my biscuit and drink. I really do not know how I watched this movie till the end. No, the plot definitely didn't keep me hooked. I guess I only stayed till the end because I had no other movie to watch. There are many reasons why I'd never recommend anyone watch this movie;

BAD WRITING

The writing is whack. I understand that’s a blunt assessment, but it is the truth. Saying the plot was written by a high school graduate is an insult to high school graduates. I admire and respect movie writers. I understand that it takes a lot to come up with a good and engaging plot. However, before a movie is produced, professionals should thoroughly review it. It is evident that this movie wasn't written by a professional, it was probably written by a high-schooler with no experience of the movie industry. The characters kept blabbing about unnecessary things. As a literature student, I appreciate effective dialogue. Dialogue is one of the ways the audience connects with the characters by gaining insights into their thoughts, perspectives, and opinions. How do you expect us to connect with the characters when they keep blabbing about irrelevant things?

TOO MANY FLAWS

Maybe a 7-year-old would enjoy this movie, but they should have known better that not only 7-year-olds would watch it. To the best of my knowledge, sharks don’t just attack people. Okay, let’s have it that sharks attack people without smelling blood or anything. About 3 characters got killed by a shark without even doing anything, but the main character who was right in front of the shark, the shark literally came close to her, looked at her, and swam away. How is that even possible? I'll tell you, it is called the power of the main character.

Also, when Jed died, his head was slightly tilted to the right. However, when the camera moved away from him to show his girlfriend, and then cut back to him almost immediately, his head was straight. So dead people can move now? Are we supposed to believe that dead people can move now? How interesting!

At the end of the movie, Ava drowned underwater and was there for a really long time. Her body manages to float to the surface and what do we have next? She came back to life! She resuscitated herself magically! Come on! How's that even possible?

I don’t think this movie deserves any star at all, but for the sake of humanity, I give it a 1 out of 10.

Thanks for reading.
