From Nordic lands, specifically in Norway, this title comes to us, which differs greatly from the conventional terror we are used to. This is an elegant work that knows how to handle the visual resources and winter landscapes typical of Nordic natural beauty, without trying to show us a dark side through them but rather giving us an aura of mystery that overwhelms us as viewers of this film.

Thelma is one of those almost surreal stories that do not use typical elements of terror, in fact it is a film difficult to classify. His argument is not the complicated thing but the succession of images that are revealed to us, the dramatic process of the whole story is what surrounds us and that is the most interesting thing, the coming-of-age, that is, the psychological development that is going away. showing during the filming of one of the characters.

Desde tierras nórdicas, específicamente en Noruega, nos llega este título que difiere mucho del terror convencional al que estamos acostumbrados. Esta es una obra elegante que sabe manejar los recursos visuales y parajes invernales propios de la belleza natural nórdica, sin pretender mostrarnos un lado oscuro a través de ellos sino más bien dándonos un halo de misterio que nos sobrecoge como espectadores de esta película.

Thelma es una de esas historias casi surrealistas que no usan elementos típicos del terror, de hecho es una película difícilmente clasificable. Su argumento no es lo complicado sino la sucesión de imágenes que se nos revelan, el proceso dramático de toda la historia es lo que nos envuelve y eso es lo más interesante, el coming-of-age, es decir el desarrollo psicológico que se va mostrando durante el rodaje de uno de los personajes.

At the beginning of the film, as a prologue, some shocking scenes will be revealed to us. A frozen lake, a winter forest, and a father trying to murder his own daughter. Why? In a few minutes, without witnessing any atrocious act, we see the girl studying at a university, shy but trying to get along in the student environment.

It should be noted that Thelma is a girl who comes from a slightly orthodox Christian family but without reaching extreme fundamentalisms. Her father is kind but severe about religion, but beyond that, Thelma has a picture of non-epileptic seizures.

From that moment we began to capture certain strange situations but we will still have a long way to understand everything that happens. Little by little we will be shown how
Thelma goes from being a shy girl to joining parties, alcohol and love for another girl from college. His experimentation process is painful due to the education he was given. In one scene we can see how he experiences that pain when calling his father and confessing that he has been drinking alcohol but contrary to what we can imagine his father was not severe or radical, he only gave him some advice.

Al principio de la película, a modo de prologo se nos revelaran unas escenas impactantes. Un lago congelado, un bosque invernal y un padre intentando asesinar a su propia hija ¿Por qué? En pocos minutos, sin presenciar ningún acto atroz, vemos a la chica estudiando en una universidad, tímida pero tratando de desenvolverse en el ambiente estudiantil.

Cabe destacar que Thelma, es una chica que proviene de una familia cristiana un poco ortodoxa pero sin llegar a fundamentalismos extremos. Su padre es amable pero severo en cuanto a la religión, pero más allá de eso, Thelma, presente un cuadro de convulsiones no epilépticas.

Desde ese momento empezamos a captar ciertas situaciones extrañas pero nos faltara mucho por entender todo lo que sucede. Poco a poco se nos ira mostrando como Thelma pasa de ser una niña tímida a integrarse a fiestas, alcohol y amor hacia otra chica de la universidad. Su proceso de experimentación es doloroso debido a la educación que le fue otorgada. En una escena podremos ver como experimenta ese dolor al llamar a su padre y confesarle que ha estado bebiendo alcohol pero contrario a lo que podamos imaginar su padre no fue severo ni radical solo le dio algunos consejos.

Certain disappearances precisely after she convulses make Thelma realize that she must be the culprit in some way. Clinical studies of her brain do not indicate any brain tumor or damage at the mental level, not even a hint of epilepsy but she knows there must be some evil within.

Thelma's father confesses certain truths to her, so she finally knows the nature of her own being and an inner struggle begins to rage within her. As you will see, it is a complicated situation for such a young girl.

As I said before, this is not an easily classifiable film but we could speculatively pigeonhole it within the psychological mystery. It is not a scary film but feelings of intrigue and search for some reason for what we are observing, but the director does not want us to get the truth of all this easily but rather in a discreet, subtle and elegant way.

Ciertas desapariciones precisamente después de que ella convulsionase hacen que Thelma se dé cuenta que ella debe ser de algún modo la culpable. Los estudios clínicos a su cerebro no indican ningún tumor cerebral ni daño a nivel mental, ni siquiera algún atisbo de epilepsia pero ella sabe que debe haber algún mal en su interior.

El padre de Thelma le confiesa ciertas verdades, así que ella conoce finalmente la naturaleza de su propio ser y una lucha interior empieza a desencadenarse dentro de ella. Como verán es una situación complicada para una chica tan joven.

Como dije anteriormente esta no es una película fácilmente clasificable pero pudiésemos encasillarla de manera especulativa por mi parte dentro del misterio psicológico. No es una película que de miedo sino sensaciones de intriga y búsqueda de alguna razón de lo que estamos observando, pero el director no desea que consigamos la verdad de todo esto de manera fácil sino más bien de una manera discreta, sutil y elegante.

The latter is what makes Thelma quite a different film, with a dramatic and mysterious unfolding that I have rarely observed in a film. Perhaps the Nordic environment is a plus point for the filming or rather the mentality that arises within these countries.

This is the first opportunity I have to see a Norwegian film, but I have seen many of the productions that are made in Sweden and I think they have many aspects in common, apart from having a fairly similar culture but I must say that Norway is a country a little more hermetic and less cosmopolitan as Sweden can be, which gives us an even greater sense of mystery when seeing the places of this shoot.

Esto último es lo que hace de Thelma una película bastante diferente, con un desenvolvimiento dramático y misterioso que pocas veces he observado en una película. Quizás el ambiente nórdico sea un punto a favor para el rodaje o más bien la mentalidad que surge dentro de estos países.

Esta es la primera oportunidad que tengo de ver una película de Noruega, pero he visto muchas de las producciones que se hacen en Suecia y creo que tienen muchos aspectos en común, aparte de tener una cultura bastante similar pero debo decir que Noruega es un país un poco más hermético y menos cosmopolita como lo puede ser Suecia lo que nos da una sensación aun mayor de misterio al ver los parajes de este rodaje.

I could consider the film as something purely juvenile if it were not the background of what happens with Thelma. The producers were smart to put an LGBT twist on the story as this can be more controversial as Thelma comes from a family with Christian values.

Thelma is not a film for people who are looking for an intoxicating fear but for those who are looking for a film of a different, elegant and subtle nature. This movie is enjoyed by watching the whole process of events as a whole and not for any specific reason. It is the type of film that makes us part of it by getting to know its characters in a more intimate way, in this case Thelma and putting ourselves in her shoes.

In conclusion, Thelma is a Norwegian production that you cannot miss, it has an unusual plot, with beautiful environments and a story that leaves us with pieces of itself throughout the filming process.

Podría considerar a la película como algo netamente juvenil sino estuviese el trasfondo de lo que sucede con Thelma. Los productores fueron inteligente en darle un toque LGBT a la historia ya que esto puede ser más controversial ya que Thelma proviene de una familia con valores cristianos.

Thelma no es una película para personas que busquen un miedo embriagador sino para los que busquen una película de naturaleza distinta, elegante y sutil. Esta película se disfruta viendo todo el proceso de los acontecimientos como un todo y no por ninguna razón especifica. Es del tipo de películas que nos hacen formar parte de ella al conocer de manera más íntima a sus personajes, en este caso a Thelma y ponernos en sus zapatos.

En conclusión, Thelma es una producción noruega que no puedes perderte, tiene un argumento poco común, con ambientes hermosos y una historia que nos va dejando pedazos de sí misma en todo el proceso del rodaje.
