Mary Poppins Returns

I’m writing this practically off memory and this is more or less my plea just in case anyone reading knows where I can watch the complete film again, because I have searched pretty much everywhere for the last five years to no avail. A film I saw at one of the happiest times in my life, I’m glad to share it with you all today.

Mary Poppins Returns (2018)

So, if you cannot tell already, this is from the book series with the title, “Mary Poppins,” and it is a sequel to the first film Mary Poppins in 1964. The musical fantasy comedy film is very family friendly and lasts about two hours plus a little more.

Summary of the Plot

The film is set in London and it is in the period of The Great Depression. Michael Banks live with his three children and is still somewhat in mourning after the death of his wife the previous year. Michael had taken a loan from his place of work and is now months behind on his payments. The new Chairman in charge who exemplifies corruption gives him till Friday to pay back the loan in full or risk the repossession of his house.

Meanwhile, on a trip to the park where Michael’s children fly their kite, the kite descends with Mary Poppins in tow. While Michael is scurrying to find a way to pay back the loan, Mary Poppins assures him that she’ll take good care of the children. From the bathroom to the streets of London, Mary takes the kids on an adventure of a lifetime. And just at the corner, but in the glaring view of all is the missing piece to take away the family’s sorrows. Would a miracle that will keep Michael’s childhood home intact happen? And that too before it’s too late?

My Thoughts and Rating

I’ll start by pointing out that it was a very random day where I stumbled on this film playing in the living room and I don’t think I’d ever sat through two hours of a movie so keenly. I was drawn, incredibly so by everything in the film, “Mary Poppins Returns.”

Starting with Mary herself. I found her very charismatic, and she had that ethereal aura about her that I would have found spooky if it weren’t a comedy film and I wasn’t watching it at two in the afternoon, lol. I loved the chop chop character she had. Giving the kids adventures upon adventures while still making sure she kept to time and everything was in place. Yeah, the film is all about her but you would agree that there are times you end up disliking the main character in a film. I’m super glad that this wasn’t the case.

Then, maybe even more than my love of Emily Blunt’s portrayal of the Mary Poppins character is the music. I don’t think there was a song that I didn’t love in the entire film. Every musical piece had the magical appeal that it needed. And all of them seemed to be sending a message, fitting yet another bit of puzzle to the board. The fantasy in it all and the fact that story book characters from childhood were featured made my eyes widen in glee.

I love the lessons taught. The beauty of taking each day at a time and not worrying for the future when you can make your present the best it could be and also that the answer to your problem may just be right in front of you. You just need to be open minded and look a little harder at that thing that looks too simple and not worth a thought. There’s a particular musical piece I’m randomly remembering. Something like, the cover is not the book. And it had to do with taking a keener look cause things aren’t always as they seem.

All this to say that I haven’t seen this film anywhere since that hot Wednesday afternoon in 2018 and I’d love to see it again. Relive the experience and maybe see if I’d find flaws in it this time because right now, I can’t think of a single fault in the movie. Such a delightful piece. A 4.4/5 stars from me.
