Hello people, today I want to talk about Shin Kamen Rider, a movie that is part of Hideaki Anno's "Shin" saga of interpreting tokusatsu icons (live-action movies or series with intensive use of special effects) being the case of this movie about a superhero from 1971, Kamen Rider.

La historia se trata de Takeshi Hongo, un hombre que fue capturado y transformado en un cyborg por la organización Shocker para que volverlo un super-soldado con características de saltamontes que les ayudaría en su misión de dominar el mundo (un clásico), sin embargo este logra escapar de su control y decide utilizar sus nuevas habilidades para vengarse de Shocker. Ruriko Midorikawa (personaje original de la película) es la responsable tanto de salvar a Takeshi como de darle información sobre sus habilidades y la ubicación de los generales de Shocker imprescindibles de derrotar para poder acabar con la corrupta organización.
The story is about Takeshi Hongo, a man who was captured and transformed into a cyborg by the Shocker organization to turn him into a super-soldier with grasshopper characteristics that would help them in their mission to the world domination (a classic), however he manages to escape from their control and decides to use his new abilities to take revenge on Shocker. Ruriko Midorikawa (original character of the film) is responsible for both saving Takeshi and giving him information about his abilities and the location of Shocker's generals who must be defeated in order to end the corrupt organization.
La organización Shocker ya no se caracterizan por ser los villanos de maldad pura, sino una con ideal corrupto de lo que es hallar la felicidad. A diferencia de Kamen Rider: The First (Adaptación anterior del 2005) que solo trajo los enemigos más icónicos de la serie para mantener el ritmo, Shin tiene mayor duración y aun así se siente apresurada por la constante persecución de tantos generales de Shocker saltando de Jefe en Jefe como un videojuego, lo cual también dificulta su intención de hacer más humanos a estos enemigos. Mientras que en The First se centraron solo en Cobra, en Shin tienes a todos estos villanos desquiciados que en su lecho de muerte tratan de conectar con el espectador cuando realmente no dio tiempo para que conectaras con quien es básicamente un obstáculo más en el camino del protagonista.
The Shocker organization is no longer characterized as pure evil villains, but one with a corrupt ideal of what it is to find happiness. Unlike Kamen Rider: The First (2005's earlier adaptation) which only brought in the series' most iconic enemies to keep up the pace, Shin is longer in length and yet feels rushed by the constant chase of so many Shocker generals jumping from boss to boss like a video game, which also hinders its intention to make these enemies more human. Whereas in The First they focused only on Cobra, in Shin you have all these unhinged villains who on their deathbed trying to connect with the viewer when it really didn't give time for you to connect with who is basically just another obstacle in the protagonist's way.
No solo puedes encontrar homenajes a la primera serie sino también a clichés manejados en sus encarnaciones más recientes, como lo serían un apoyo femenino, un rival que se uniría luego a su causa, hasta un Rider malvado como último enemigo a vencer. Lo cual demuestra de que Hideaki no se involucró en este proyecto solo por la nostalgia, sino que en general disfruta de la franquicia de Kamen Rider incluyendo lo más nuevo de esta aun cuando el ya no sea el público objetivo.
Not only can you find homages to the first series but also to clichés handled in its more recent incarnations, such as a female support, a rival who would later join his cause, even an evil Rider as the ultimate enemy to defeat. Which shows that Hideaki didn't get involved in this project just for nostalgia's sake, but that he generally enjoys the Kamen Rider franchise by including the latest in the franchise even if he is no longer the target audience.
La dirección de la película es cuanto menos extraña debido a que trata de emular las técnicas cinematográficas usadas en la serie original que compensaban el poco presupuesto y las limitaciones de la época, ya saben, múltiples cortes, ángulos de cámara raros, etc… Pero la idea más que ya de por si es problemática es querer adaptar Kamen Rider a un público más adulto. Digo, el suspenso, la violencia y los protagonistas sufridos han estado ahí desde siempre; pero también están las ridiculeces que cualquiera que allá visto Mighty Morphin Power Rangers sabrá a que me refiero, por lo que querer tener ambas cosas en la película es ambicionar de más. El resultado salió… regular, ósea estamos hablando de una serie a lo Power Rangers pero en 1971, obvio para alguien como yo que creció con Power Rangers Lightspeed en adelante le resulta surrealista todo estos momentos cursis, pero nada que me impidiera disfrutarla o restarle peso al drama por el que Takeshi pasa, el cual me hubiera gustado que hubiera más enfoque en como su transformación no solo le hace duar de su humanidad sino el como significo en un punto de no retorno donde ya no puede regresar a su vida normal, lo cual a mi parecer era un elemento igual de icónico que el resto, en vez de eso su lucha es mas contra sus impulsos violentos que no desaparecieron luego de Ruriko le liberara del control de Shocker.
The direction of the film is strange to say the least because it tries to emulate the cinematic techniques used in the original series that compensated for the low budget and the limitations of the time, you know, multiple cuts, weird camera angles, etc... But the idea that is already problematic in itself is to want to adapt Kamen Rider to a more adult audience. I mean, the suspense, the violence and the suffering protagonists have always been there; but there's also the ridiculousness that anyone who has seen Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will know what I mean, so wanting to have both in the movie is over-ambitious. The result came out... average, I mean we are talking about a Power Rangers series but in 1971, obviously for someone like me who grew up with Power Rangers Lightspeed onwards it's surreal all these cheesy moments, but nothing that would stop me from enjoying it or detract from the drama that Takeshi goes through, which I wish there had been more focus on how his transformation not only makes him lose his humanity but how it means he reaches a point of no return where he can no longer return to his normal life, which I thought was as iconic an element as the rest, instead his struggle is more against his violent urges that didn't go away after Ruriko freed him from Shocker's control.
Puedo concluir que con todo y las cosas que no me convencieron del todo, se nota el amor puesto en el filme, no es precisamente mi película ideal para introducir a alguien a este superhéroe (ese sería Kamen Rider The First) pero lo que sí puedo decir es que si es un homenaje, no solo a la serie original del 1971, sino de la franquicia en general, y bueno, si no eres de Kamen Rider pues mínimo aquí habrán fans de Hideaki Anno, jeje. Con todo ya dicho, le doy un 6,55/10
I can conclude that with all the things that didn't convince me at all, you can see the love put into the film, it's not exactly my ideal film to introduce someone to this superhero (that would be Kamen Rider The First) but what I can say is that it is a tribute, not only to the original series of 1971, but to the franchise in general, and well, if you're not a Kamen Rider fan, there will be Hideaki Anno fans here at least, hehe. All in all, I give it a 6.55/10.
