Cine TV Community Spotlight #15

Hello and welcome to the 15TH edition of Cine TV Community Spotlight. The Cine TV Spotlight Series has begun in a bid to boost engagement and interaction in the community and showcase the work of deserving authors.

And it’s all simple. At the end of every week, we spotlight works by authors based on the content, originality, style, and word count. It is not a contest but just our way of creating exposure for the works we enjoyed throughout the week and boosting exceptionally written content by our authors. Simply put, give it your best and have fun while at it, and then we showcase your work here.

Title: The Waiter

Here’s where things get murky. A comedy-thriller typically pits an unsuspecting hero against a formidable villain, right? Wrong. In The Waiter, Akpos and Tonye might as well exist on different planets. Their interactions are so insignificant that you could erase Akpos entirely, and Tonye’s Robin Hood-inspired escapades would remain unbothered. Tonye’s motives—shaky but present—at least attempt depth. Akpos, however, is just out here screaming “Warri no dey carry last!” while uppercutting nameless henchmen.

Title: The Other Boelyn Girl

After seeing this film, you might think Anne is the villain but she's not. These young ladies are subjected to the whims of their ambitious patriarchs and served up as pawns for the king to do with as he pleased. Anne may seem like a cunning character but she's merely doing what it takes to survive in such a treacherous court. King Henry VIII and Duke of Norfolk are the villains in this story.

Title: Awake

While everything is going normally in the movie, suddenly a lightning bolt strikes at night and people can't sleep. Yes, imagine a universe where you can't sleep, how bad would everything be? The movie is based on this dystopia. Of course, at some point people start to go crazy. Meanwhile, a mother realizes that her little daughter can sleep. This means that she is the chosen one or that antibodies can be produced from her. From then on, everyone goes after the little boy and a chase begins.

Title: Gremlins: The Deadly Creatures of Christmas

The story as a narrative has a lot of creativity, creatures that make mischief at Christmas because of human carelessness that reminds us of the responsibility of being attentive to the conditions of things and more so when they are alive. You can see this in the trailer which is a compilation of everyday Christmas situations translated into these Gremlins who in their own disastrous way do things that we do which makes them scary and funny at the same time.

Title: HBO's The Penguin

I think the series could have answered that question with less episodes. It didn't have to be as long as it was. The need to stretch out the drama into eight episodes required the introduction of extraneous elements. For example, the introduction of Dr. Julian Rush, from Arkham Asylum, added little to the arc of the drama. Julian Rush is a time vampire--he uses up minutes to make the series longer. In The Penguin, the conflict between the arch rivals, Oswald and Sofia, is the engine that impels the movie forward.

Title: In The Name of Money

I was recently reading an article about actor Jim Carrey's return to the movies, after announcing his retirement from the big screen about two years ago. Carrey decided to return "solely" because of the money, and the project he chose to do so was the third part of Sonic (which, by the way, recently premiered in theaters). These types of attitudes focused solely on the financial side are nothing new, but the fact that this is said publicly is.

Title: Squid Game 2: Why Not Everyone Should Watch It

Although there is a lesson the series is trying to pass, not everyone will understand because most people just watch cinematography for fun without understanding the message behind it. I feel the series shouldn't be rated 18+ but 25+. Many people feel they are adults and they can consume all kinds of content; the truth is that they cannot.
