Introduction and plot overview

The Daniels, Director of the popular music video Turn down for what by DJ snake and lil Jon, is back yet again with another thrilling movie, Everything everywhere all at once, released in 2022. A movie that stars actress, Michelle yeoh, who plays the character of Evelyn wang, a normal laundry owner who gets caught in the web of a fantasy where she discovers that she's the saviour of the multiverse. The one chosen to stop a dark force, Jobu tupaki, who comes from another universe called the Alpha verse.

she struggles to fathom this fantasy that has now become a new found reality, one where she teleports to different versions of herself in different universes, each version with a unique super power.

Will she be able to make peace with herself to save the world?? or will she get lost to that empty void that has traumatized her over the years??

Theme and character analysis

The movie reflects on the search for purpose. The struggle to come to terms with a life that was never planned for. It dissects the complexities of familial relationships and family bonds where one must accept the imperfections that exist in every family. It creates a picture that emphasizes on 'satisfaction.' A picture where peace must be made amidst the incessant struggles, misfortunes and imperfections that exists in every family.

Evelyn Wong effectively embodies the mix of a fictional super hero, a wife and a mum while also battling to come to terms with her inner self amidst the situation she finds herself. She maintains character throughout the movie, keeping us in constant view of the action, comedy, and displayed emotions.

The protagonist, Jobu tupaki—her daughter's alter ego—from another universe, adds to the emotional depth despite her displayed chaos—Her views and philosophy about life being the main reason. On the other hand, her husband, Mr Wang(played by Ke Huy Quan), portrays interest, peace, and love in a way that transcends calmness, balancing the characters.

Director's layout

The Director, came with a superb plot in this film. It was a blend of action, humour, fantasy, and, sci-fi—all in the same movie. This is a unique display of creativity. The colourful scenes and transitions to different super characters across different universes—Mysterious chef with a racoon, Kung Fu warriors, leaping bunnies, and beings with sausage-roll fingers—leaves us with a dazzling experience, one that is seldom seen.

Pros and cons

The setting was a beautiful display of colours. A film that incorporates all the genres of movies together, coalescing them into a single piece.

However, the complexity of information to be processed in a short frame of time was quite overwhelming. It felt a little bit over dramatic, the type that can make one lose interest along the line—well, it's what you get when you have a mixture of all genres.

Personal thoughts

I did love the emotional wealth and life lessons regardless. It's a reminder that no family is perfect and that in every family lies loopholes, regrets, and mistakes, but are these enough to make the essence of our existence worthless? No. Rather, they add meaning, giving us a reason to work harder so as to restructure these loopholes. That's what life should be about, don't you think so?? Well, are you a fan of the famous actor, Jackie Chan? this is for you!!

Final verdict

Overall, "Everything everywhere all at once." Is a great heartfelt masterpiece that delves into the foundation of family, purpose, and essence of existence; while blending fictional beings with super powers existing across the different universe—the multiverse—into the same picture, capturing its audience with its kung-fu style of action and hilarious comedy... Just something to keep our eyes fully locked in.

Everything everywhere all at once is a classic I would rate 7/10
