Erfolgreiches Debüt

Wieder einmal bin ich zufällig über ein richtig gutes Buch gestolpert. Das Cover fiel mir ins Auge und die Story klang interessant:

Die 25-jährige Takako hat einen Job, eine Wohnung in Tokio und einen festen Freund. Als dieser ihr eines Abends freudig eröffnet, er werde heiraten – und zwar eine andere –, fällt sie aus allen Wolken. Vor Kummer verkriecht sie sich und kündigt ihren Job. Als ihr Onkel ihr anbietet, eine Zeitlang in seinem Antiquariat im berühmten »Bücherviertel« Tokios, Jimbōchō, auszuhelfen und dort auch unterzukommen, findet sie das zwar zunächst alles andere als reizvoll, willigt aber ein. Doch in dem kleinen Zimmer über dem Laden, inmitten von Büchern, entdeckt sie ihre Leidenschaft fürs Lesen – und schöpft allmählich wieder neue Kraft.

Von der ersten Seite wird man in die Geschichte hineingezogen und der Schreibstil ist klar sowie ausdrucksstark. Tatsächlich war das Buch des Autors Satoshi Yagisawa - ja er hat den gleichen Vornamen wie der Bitcoin Erfinder - in Japan ein Riesenerfolg. Es kam bereits 2010 heraus und verkaufte sich dort über 100.000 (!) mal. Es ist sein Debütroman, auch hier fühle ich mich wieder mal bestätigt: Erstlingswerke sind häufig ganz hervorragende Bücher, wer sein erstes Buch verlegt bekommt, muss schon echt gut sein.

Successful debut

Once again, I stumbled across a really good book by chance. The cover caught my eye and the story sounded interesting:

When twenty-five-year-old Takako's boyfriend reveals he's marrying someone else, she reluctantly accepts her eccentric uncle Satoru's offer to live rent-free in the tiny room above his shop.
Hidden in Jimbocho, Tokyo, the Morisaki Bookshop is a booklover's paradise. On a quiet corner in an old wooden building, the shop is filled with hundreds of second-hand books. It is Satoru's pride and joy, and he has devoted his life to the bookshop since his wife left him five years earlier.
Hoping to nurse her broken heart in peace, Takako is surprised to encounter new worlds within the stacks of books lining the shop.

From the first page you are drawn into the story and the writing style is clear and expressive. In fact, the book by author Satoshi Yagisawa - yes, he has the same first name as the inventor of Bitcoin - was a huge success in Japan. It was published back in 2010 and sold over 100,000 (!) copies there. It's his debut novel, and once again I feel vindicated: First novels are often really excellent books, anyone who gets their first book published must be really good.
