Hello everyone! Today I am going to share some pictures of the street food that I had during my stay in Penang. My family and I sat at a famous street food restaurant and had a yummy meal for dinner. It was a very busy street with many people walking around including plenty of tourists. At the same time, cars and motorbikes were also going on the same road so we had to be mindful of where we walked.
This is a section of the shop where they were grilling sate which is a type of local food. There's more of the shop but I didn't take the pictures because my spot wasn't convenient and it was crowded.
This is Char Hor Fun. It is made of flat rice noodles. My brother ordered this. Originally it was known as Sar Hor Fun and gradually tuned into the current term in Penang. It is the Cantonese version of flat rice noodles. Here she also included other items such as tauh, eggs and prawns. It was a little too liquidy for my liking but it tasted good.
Some sliced green chillies were included and not mixed directly into the meal because some people may not want more spicy taste so this way customers can choose how much chilli they want. However I'm warning, it was spicy and almost raw so I don't recommend including it.
This is what the rest of us ordered. It is called Char Kuew Teow.
Here's a closer look. It is also a type of flat rice noodles. The term used for it means stir fried rice noodles. While this may seem similar to the previous dish, its actually quite different in the method of preparation and taste as well. I have seen the way they cook it. I have seen the fire dancing while the spatula hits the cooking wok making a music.
There is a layer of banana leaf under the dish but it's not very visible here as it is all covered. It gives a nice additional flavour to the meal and looks pleasant too like the olden days.
We ordered soya bean to drink. It was cold from the fridge and went along well with the meal.
It is better to order drinks, because if we don't, then we need to pay an additional amount of RM 2.00 which is about 0.45 USD. It was already written on a board there. Of course, it goes without saying that no outside drinks are allowed too. I mean we can drink them but we still have to order more drinks here or pay the additional pay.
This is how the ambience was. A very happening location with more pedestrians than cars. The cars go very slowly as people kept walking around back and forth. Meanwhile, shop owners had helpers promoting their shops with boards and menus right in their hands to lure customers.
We ordered one more item for the day which is satay. They are pieces of meat which are grilled and then skewed. Usually wooden sticks are used for this. We can order any meat we like. My family and I got 10 sticks of chicken meat. Sometimes they won't use quality meat but these were solid with very little fat which is the cholesterol causing part.
This is the satay sauce. The main ingredient is peanuts and the others are dried chillies, with herbs such as galangal, ginger, lemongrass and some palm sugar for a pop of sweetness. The onion and cucumber are just for garnish. We eat the satay after dipping it into this sauce. It wasn't spicy and tasted just right. I also ate the cucumber for some fibre.
This is our little table full of yummy delicacies. While the place may not be spacious, it was still worth every penny as the pricing was reasonable and the meal was wonderful.
I couldn't find bitmojis of satay so I got the one closest to it, which is kebab 😅 Thank you for dropping by and I wish you have a great day ahead!
