Been travelling like cray cray and now back at it again. Delicious dishes at one of local restaurants in Ayutthaya. A few days ago, I shared about a 'Cotton Candy Cafe'. Nope, not a regular cotton candy and not a regular dessert dishes you see elsewhere either, it's an Ayutthaya must-try! so.. you'd better check it out :)
Today on the other hand, I will be sharing more of savory dishes from Kanom Chin Ton Kam Poo restaurant.
Khanom chin (ขนมจีน) are fresh, thin rice noodles made from rice sometimes fermented for a few days, boiled, and then made into noodles. It has unique soft texture and most of the time eaten with some certain types of soup and curry through out Thailand.
Ton Kam Poo (ต้มก้ามปู) is a type of this giant tree that this restaurant happens to be built closed to. Not exactly sure which one comes first but currently, these 2 are besides each other and the restaurant is just named after the tree.
Stuffed chillis
We first got this Stuffed chillis as an appetizer. No, this is not something you can find in all Thai restaurants so quite a unique dish they offer here. Almost reminded me of jalapeno popper but... this one is battered mild-spicy chilli stuffed with some ground pork served with sweet chili sauce. We loved it!
Noodles
There are a few different types of noodles that can be chosen to eat with a few different types of curries/soups. We went with, of course, 'Khanom chin (ขนมจีน)' as this place is known for it. Also another type of wide, flat noodle called 'Sen Yai (เส้นใหญ่)' that has a little more chewy texture. This one I just recently found out that it goes so good with all curry dishes.
Crab curry
Here's the featured dish of this Kanom Chin Ton Kam Poo restaurant. Funny too if you think about it, Crab in Thai is 'Poo (ปู) so it's the same name of the restaurant that's named after the type of tree. Got it? #lol
Anyways, they are known for this dish which is a thick red curry with ton of crab meat chunks. There are a dime a dozen red curries out there but it's my first time trying this it with just crab. Love the combination 100% !
Unlimited veggies
All the curries and noodle would be so good without fresh veggies and fermented veggies and Kanom Chin Ton Kam Poo restaurant knows it so here you go, Unlimited veggies in the common area where you can pick all the veggies you want under 1 condition, finish it or you pay 20THB. Shredded cabbage, sweet basils, bean sprouts, and fermented Chinese cabbages.
Hung Lay Curry + Balloon roti
Moarrrr curries!
I thought it was going to be enough food but no, crab is expensive so it comes in such small portion so we needed to order another dish and we chose to go with another type of red curry from Northern Thailand called 'Hung lay curry'. It's a little thicker and has that sweet and sour taste of tamarind.
Comes in a set with this Balloon roti. A roti dough with special way of making somehow they make it looks like a balloon. Quite crispy, real oily so combined with this very oily curry, I had no words.
Curry at its most stylish
I personally love how the place is decorated. All wooden and just match the theme of Ayutthaya which is the old capital known for its historic sites and many temples around. Even more stylish with all the red umbrellas they use to decorate the place.
As for the food, I don't mean to scare you but I'd love to be honest here. I got food poisoning that I think it's because of the food from this place plus the heat during the day combined. It's just the fact that they use coconut milk mostly in their dishes and the weather that hot was really not coconut curry's best friend.
I would totally recommend the place still for how delicious it is. Just pick a nice and cool day to go enjoy it!

The flavor is savory, vibrant and herbaceous. It's basically red curry plus lots of turmeric. You'll find Southern Thai curries that are more yellow than this and that is due to the ratio of red curry to turmeric that is used. This recipe is a great way to use up leftover red curry paste. This is one of my favorite dishes. My mom always preps and presents her noodle so beautifully in the basket. Mine always look so wonky. 🥴 My mom is Cambodian. A similar noodle to Thailand too,
