TacoCat's TrEats #143: The Thicc-est Crunchiest Fried Chicken Sammich?! 🍔

Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again but obviously you have to be vaccinated. But since there aren't any restrictions this allows us to try out different food places again! However, we're still trying to stay safe and limiting our time out so we've also been trying different places via takeouts!

On some weekdays when I'm too busy or tired to cook we'll order food delivery using one of the apps we have here like GrabFood, Foodpanda, etc. The other day I was really craving some fried chicken but didn't want any regular fast food chicken place like KFC. So we checked the app and found this shop called Fatty Bom Bom which specialises in affordable halal western food!

Fatty Bom Bom is actually a local term which was often used as an insult on someone who is overweight. It was a playground insult back in the day but it's been a long time since we've come across it, so we were surprised to see it's actually a local western chain here! We'd never heard of this place before, but their prices seem really reasonable and the food sounded really good too, so we thought we'd give it a shot.

After we placed our order on the app, I went to go make my signature roasted veggies since I doubt there would be much veggies with the set we ordered other than maybe coleslaw which I'm not a fan of.

And just in time, our order arrived about 5 minutes later! It came in two identical boxes and were really warm still which was good.

Since I was craving for some crispy chicken, I decided to try their Crispy Chicken Roll. I wasn't sure what kind of roll it was going to be but it did look something like a sandwich so I was intrigued. And when I opened up my box, this huge piece of fried chicken was inside!

It was very surprising since I was not expecting such a huge piece of fried chicken! It was completely covering the bread and coleslaw which was kinda smushed underneath the weight of the hefty fried chicken cutlet. But it was very impressive and I was so eager to try it! There was also a side of french fries with the set.

Sean ordered the Grilled Fish set which came with some brown sauce and mashed potato, a bun and a side of french fries as well.

The chicken was actually really delicious! The batter was nice and fried to crispy perfection but the meat was still tender and juicy inside. The batter was also savoury but I think could've used some extra spice imo. I did dip it in the chili sauce and it was good too.

I actually tried to fit the chicken in between the bread slices but couldn't. I had to cut the chicken into half and could barely fit it in still. It tasted good with the bread though! The bread was soft and lightly toasted and buttered, although I would've liked it to be toasted more the soft texture of the bread contrasted with the crunchiness of the chicken that it was really nice and yummy!

The fries were kinda average and weren't as crispy anymore but that might be due to the delivery and condensation from the box. I think it was also a little undersalted but the chili helped.

I tried a little bit of Sean's grilled fish and it was actually pretty good too! The fish was nicely grilled but not dry, but I think it could've used a bit more seasoning. The brown sauce complemented it well though so it was alright.

I wouldn't mind trying their rice or pasta options in the future, but for 7 bucks this crunchy chicken roll was really the bomb! Turns out they have quite a few outlets all over the country so if you're hankering for some affordable halal western food, try Fatty Bom Bom!
