TacoCat's TrEats #126: Cheapest and Crispiest Fried Fish! ๐ŸŸ

Hey Hive!

Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again, but up to 2 people and obviously you have to be vaccinated. But at least this allows us to try out different restaurants again!

This was actually quite a while back, on New Years' Day 2022 in fact! We had a pretty wild New Years' Eve where we spent the night having fun and playing games! So we wanted to chill out and relax on New Years' Day especially since it was going to be crowded out with everyone partying. Neither of us are party people obviously, and for our first meal of 2022 we wanted to have something yummy but nearby our place since we didn't want to go out too far where it'd be crowded.

So we went back to one of our favourite food courts at Woodlands Glen and tried out a new stall!

image.png

The interior of the food court is pretty nice and modern, with a natural wood aesthetic, mixed with red brick accents. It's also quite spacious despite not being very big and is quite comfortable but can be pretty crowded on weekends. I also like that it's air-conditioned as well with fans circulating the cool air so that it's cooling despite all the hot air dispersed from the stalls.

So the specific stall we were going to try today is the tzi char stall at the back of the food court! If you're unfamilar, tzi char is a local Hokkien term here which describe an economical food stall which provides a wide selection of common and affordable dishes which approximate home-cooked meals. But it's basically typical Chinese food fare with different types of seafood, meat and vegetable dishes as well as different rice and noodle dishes!

image.png

And this stall in particular specialises in seafood and had a promotion for fried seabass for only $12.90, which is pretty affordable for this type of dish. They even had different flavours like Asam, HK Style Steamed or Deep Fried. Sean's mum had said their fish is pretty good and cheap and this is actually one of the few fish dishes that Sean likes so we were interested to give it a try!

The stall is called Bei Gang Fish Village and here's most of their menu:

This was most of their seafood dishes including their promotional fish:

But being a tzi char stall they of course had a myriad of other dishes too like fish fillets, omelette, pork:

And different chicken, beancurd and veggies dishes:

And of course soup, noodle and rice dishes:

It was actually kinda crowded in the food court that day but thankfully we managed to get a table and Sean ordered a few other different dishes along with their promotional fish, like Onion Omelette and my favourite Sambal Kangkong:

For our staple we ordered a simple Fried Rice:

We didn't want to eat too much until the main dish arrived and luckily soon after that our Deep Fried Seabass arrived! Since both of us like fried stuff we decided on the fried fish which comes with the soy sauce we both like! And this was what the fish looked like:

image.png

I'm not entirely sure how they prepare this but I think they steam the fish first before deep frying the outside? So the flesh is steamed while the outside is fried to crispy perfection and laid on top of a pool of sesame soy sauce. It looked and smelled so delicious!

image.png

This was our very special and very delicious New Years' meal in its entirety!

image.png

The fried rice dish was pretty plain by itself but it matched well with the other dishes especially the sambal kangkong. The omelette was really yummy too with more than enough onions and it was nicely seasoned. The fish was really good too! It was crispy but not too dry while the flesh was nicely cooked. The sauce was perfect too and fit the rice nicely as well.

image.png

The fish is reminiscent of the fish dishes that are typically served at weddings but fried so it's even better!

Look at our happy faces before we scarfed down our delicious meal!

image.png

Overall, it was definitely a very fulfilling meal and one of the best fish dishes we've had in recent times! We normally don't eat fish outside since it's quite expensive so I'd just cook it myself so this was a treat. And it was perfect since it was on promotion too! It was so delicious that we practically ate the fish down to its bones!

I definitely recommend this kind of fish dish if coming to this stall is impossible or too troublesome so give it a try if you can!
