It is so cold outside with the temperatures dropping while the severe winter storm front pushes its way to New York. I thought it would be the perfect day to make some old-fashioned sweet bread. This is a recipe that my cousin gave me over 20 years ago so I have no idea where it originated.
SWEET BREAD
2 cups lukewarm water
1 tablespoon yeast
2/3 cup sugar
5 cups all-purpose flour
- Mix the yeast with the water and add 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let it rest for 15 minutes until bubbly/foamy.
- Mix yeast with the sugar and flour until a dough ball forms then knead well.
- Place in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a cloth and let it rise until doubled.
- Punch down the dough and knead it slightly. Cut the dough in half to create 2 loaves.
- Grease pans with oil or lard and place dough into the pans and cover them with a cloth again.
- Once the dough has doubled again in size inside the bread pans bake at 350° F. for 25 minutes.
- Remove the loaves from the pans and cool on a rack.
I bet you can hardly wait to cut into a loaf for a little sample. I know my husband is always standing close by in anticipation, lol.
These are some small loaves I make for my significant other just for sampling before I send some of the larger loaves to the neighbors. Of course, he always tells me how terrible it is and I should keep trying to improve - yea right!
