Homemade French Salad

Hello, chefs! πŸ˜‹

New Year Holidays are over and we're back to our old ways of doing things.
There was plenty of food for the New Year's Eve dinner, and here I'll present one dish that we traditionally prepare at home for the holidays.

It's, as the title suggests, a French salad, a rather calorie-dense meatless dish, not to be missed for New Year's Eve dinner in our home. We usually prepare a large quantity of it and eat it as a side dish to other dishes.

To make a homemade French salad we need:

  • pickled cucumbers
  • hard-boiled eggs
  • boiled potatoes
  • boiled carrots
  • boiled peas
  • mayonnaise
  • mustard
  • lemon
  • salt and pepper
  • olive oil

I've only listed the ingredients here, not the quantities, which depend on your taste, some people like more potatoes and mayonnaise, others like pickles, etc... if you give roughly the same amount of everything you'll be fine.
It would be best if everything was your own home-grown products, but in the modern world, that's already difficult.

We bought mayonnaise (you could also make it with eggs from local hens but they have to be very fresh, we didn't have any because we used them in baking), carrots (this year was more of a bad carrot harvest) and mustard, which we never make at home.

Moving on to the recipe, first cook the potatoes, eggs, carrots, and peas.
The pickles don't need to be cooked :)
Then cut all the ingredients into smaller, roughly equal pieces.

This cutting is the most time-consuming part of the preparation. 😁
Finally, I cut everything.

Now put all the prepared ingredients in one large bowl and mix all the vegetables.

The key ingredient for the French salad is still missing.
This is the dressing sauce, which is made from mayonnaise, mustard, and lemon.

Let's say, on the eye, five large spoonfuls of mayonnaise, one teaspoon of mustard, and a squeeze of one lemon.
Salt and pepper to taste, add a tablespoon of olive oil if necessary, stir and pour over the vegetables.

That's it!
French salad prepared in this way can keep in the fridge for up to five days. We serve it as a side dish with other dishes.

Bon Appetit!

It had to be very good. You can also use small pasta instead of potatoes. Try it next time and let me know 😎

I already tried but then that's not French salad :)

That if it looks delicious, everywhere it looks delicious, you do know how to prepare a good sandwich 😁

Sandwich? Where do you see the sandwich? 😁

Sandwich on the brain. I could put your main dish in a bun though haha

It looks delicious 🀀

Yes, it is very tasty

This French salad looks delicious. I like all the ingredients and will have to make it.

Yeah, it's a kind of tradition here, whereas with mayonnaise it's considered a luxury dish, more for the holidays.

This looks delicious. Prep is always the worst part and usually takes longer that the main dish. This certainly looks worth the effort!

Yeah, that's true. A high-calorie dish, rich in protein and vegetables

Russians have the same salad, it is very good... I think I must make also this soon more πŸ˜…πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸ·πŸ»

Yes, but Russian salad is with ham I think.

It is up for you if you want it in, I not put it in πŸ€—πŸ‘ŒπŸ» you can make it in different ways.

Agree, it's up to you. When I check both recipes I just noticed that the Russian salad is with meat and french without. But, as you say, it depends on you, what will you put in. Somewhere (mostly in Italy) they put small pasta instead of potatoes... etc... maybe Greeks put olives inside, who knows :) 😎

Yeh ... we use lot times pasta too :)) ... it is more easy and fast to do :))
But I like lot time when potatoes are in :)) and in there is also with a light smoked sausage :))

Yeah, smoked sausage fits in! 😎

It looks delicious.

Yes, it is. Thanks for stopping by. 😎

That's good stuff. @clairemobey

But I am rather sure we could possibly add a little meat in there if you wanted to, but this would reduce the storage time from 5 days possible to 2ish days.

Thanks for the share!

Yeah, it could be meat, ham, more ingredients - olives, etc... but that's the classic recipe. With meat is called Russian salad :)

Add Biltong and then it's an Afrikaans Salad 🀣🀣🀣

Yeah, it could be.😎🍻

I have never heard of this, but it looks like it is worth the effort! I'm a bit of a mayonnaise fan, so the more the merrier!

Yeah, mayonnaise is the main and most important ingredient! 😎

yummy. It had to be very good

9 days straight in my feed. THANKS A LOT!
