They probably wouldn't last that long here either XD though I don't know if we'd have to remove the smarties or not these days o_O (there was a period of time where no one was big on the smarties and a longer period of time where we avoided them like the plague as red and blue food colouring was really, really, really nightmare for youngest).
Alergies suck, be it foods or grass, and everyone can develop them at any age 😬 Any similar sugar coated candies like Smarties (or MnMs), would work too. Bulk food stores sometime carry these kind of candies, with separated colors 😊
