Life in the village is truly a delightful experience, especially when it comes to enjoying fresh foods harvested directly from the farm. There's something incredibly rewarding about preparing a meal with ingredients you've grown yourself. Today, I’m excited to share with you how I cooked a delicious yam porridge using yam we recently harvested. Let me take you through the experience!
So the yam we planted was already due for harvesting and we were super excited, we went there with uncle and he was able to dig out about four tubers from the ground, the ones we were sure was due. Each tuber of yam was large so we share it among all of us to carry it back home.
On getting home we decided on cooking one for lunch and it was my turn to cook lunch. Below is one tuber that we decided to cook:
So I got to work! Cooking in the village might seem very stressful because you have to break the woods and make fire.
So that was the first thing I did, I was breaking the woods into smaller pieces and set them properly to make fire
After I got the fire burning, I get my ingredients ready, but I put water in a pot and place it on the burning fire to heat up
Below are the ingredients I used for making the meal:
Ingredients
For a tuber of yam
- 1 handful of dried onions
- 2 seasoning cubes
- 2 deep cooking spoon palm oil
- 1 cooking spoon ground crayfish
- 1 cooking spoon black pepper
Next step I took was cut the yam into small pieces and remove the yam peels
After that I wash it thoroughly in water, 2 to 3 times to make sure it's very clean. Then I put them into the pot of boiling water and cover it to allow the yam to soften
I ad salt to it too while waiting for it to soften.
To check if it is soft enough I use fork to pierce it and if it goes in freely and smoothly we know it's ready!
So I reduce the water in it a bit and it was time to turn it to porridge as we call it. So it was time to add the other ingredients. So I added the oil first
Next the onions and I stirred properly at this point
Next thing I added was the seasoning cubes
I added the black pepper
Then the ground crayfish
I stirred it properly and covered it to let everything to mix
After a while it was ready to be served as you see below:
.
So the first work of cooking was done, but that's not where everything ends, you still have to serve everyone at home. So I got plates for everyone and began serving food for each person
So below you see me dishing out food for the people who are at home leaving the rest in the pot for those who are out!
I set everything on the dining table and called everyone to come eat their food.
I also dished out my own portion and enjoyed mine too
There's something incredibly satisfying about cooking with fresh yam straight from the farm—it's not just the taste, but the feeling of connection to nature.
I'm so happy I was given the opportunity to cook this and we all enjoyed it so much.
I'm also thankful for the opportunity to share it here, I hope you enjoyed the process. Thank you and see you next time 🤗
