That $0.70 isn’t on discount or special occasion. That is the actual price of a noodle served with chicken and fried dumplings. As you can see from the queue, it’s pretty long and it doesn’t matter where you go, anywhere in Indonesia, the queue looks pretty much the same. This noodle shop has been a favorite ice breaker topic for me when I travel around because, who doesn’t know that noodle shop, unless they live under a rock. I often ask driver and ask them what makes the place to appealing and the answer varies. Some said because it’s cheap, another said because it suits local’s palette. The thing is, I never go to the noodle shop itself. I prefer to order it from the food app because again, the queue can get that long and there’s waiting time. So, coming to that shop, I was amazed of the price and wondered, “ How are they making profit?” I mean, it hasn’t been answered although I have hypothesis that they are essentially fast food chain except it’s more homemade Indonesian style. But there’s also another factor where they make profit from extra money as they priced it higher on the food app. Who knows?

Another thing that never fails to amaze me is that the noodles are delicious. It’s not like your regular Indonesian street food style noodle. It actually is pretty decent and similar to oil noodles. This noodle is also served with fried dumplings and chicken fillings with tiny chopped spring onions. I joked with my friend that I can literally live in this city for $3 a day eating at that noodle shop as it opens 24/7. My friend replied that I’d be at the hospital the next day. But really, if you can sustain yourself just by eating noodles, I am not kidding that you can live off around $3 /day and you can even get yourself a glass of ice with strawberries, peach, apple, milky and syrup for only $0.70 too. I would say though, that is the best meal combination and decent one that I could get for only $1.5. So far, the noodles from that place are the cheapest oil-noodles I’ve ever tried.

Food in this city is categorically cheap compared to many cities and provinces in Java. There are many local meals and delicacies under $1 that will get you through the day. It’s just the matter about your personal palate and your wallet too. For the locals, they certainly can live off these food but for an outsider like myself, I find it hard adjusting to the extra sweetness of everything in the city.

Heh. This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode about soup. The soup was really good but the shop owner was very strict about it.

Hahaha such a classic

Gotta love the soup nazi!

😂 What a funny scene. It's really often that a good food places like that, the owner is often rude 😂

It's a classic comedy scene. The "soup nazi" actor even went on tour for charity. He came to Canada and just basically walked around saying "no soup for you!" over and over. The whole thing was mad and hilarious.

Hah! Interesting name "Gacoan" that could mean a lot of things. It could mean "Jagoan" (hero) and also "No Profit". The word "Coan" in the Chinese Hokkien dialect means "Profit", so GaCoan (play in word) could also mean Gak Untung (No Profit). It must be a very popular hang-out joint for students and youngsters.

lmao that's probably what they actually meant by those name. Also yes, it's quite popular and all that, convenient place, cheap food, 24/7, just everything students/youngsters need.

This is really the cheapest noodle I've ever seen. I think the cheapest I have seen in Turkey was about 3 dollars, which is not very expensive. Or is it? I've been thinking a lot about how these places make a profit. Maybe they make noodle very cheaply and make a profit because they sell so many a day.

hahaha yeah, sometimes it's crazy how things are priced around. The strangest part about living in this country has been seeing how there are places with western price but also places for locals that food are hardly beyond $1. Even with current inflation and such, these thing still exist and around here, you can live off about 20 HIVE/day which seems very reasonable just for food alone. Perhaps if you are tight on the budget 10Hive is enough just for food. Maybe that too, they sell so many in a day, keep their production cost very low and making profit from it.

Yes, that's what I'm talking about, low cost, high sales! Feeding 10 Hives a day sounds good. I hope in the future people will accept payment with Hive 🤣.

I thought you liked sweet, given your leaning to Starbucks .. 😂

One thing that Asia is famous for is cheap food that's for sure. But yeah there's a big diff between street food and restaurants!

Even the noodles I buy in packs here are more than 70 cents, especially my fave brand of ramen or udon is around $4!

😂 I am full of contradictory. Despite my liking to starbucks, I don't like sweet stuff, I enjoy something savory and salty. It's true though with those ramen and udon, it costs about $2 ish to $3 here but for local stuff, plenty of cheap stuff around esp in this city hehe 😃

Contradictions make for a far more interesting person!

Thats a decent and tasty looking portion and for that price! I should not have seen this, just before bed. It's not always a plus to live in the countryside, where I can't even order food delivery ;^)

I thought about that, living in the countryside comes with its own challenge, no food delivery! I can live with that though :D as long as my pantry is full of snacks haha. Otherwise, the worms in my stomach will go on demonstration demanding for food.

Wow, just $0.70 for that amount of serving!? With the increasing price of goods, a noodle that cost around $0.70 is already a heaven sent hahaha.

@cli4d True! I would say though I am surprised the food cost is still low despite the inflation and the rising fuel cost. I guess, if they increase these prices, there'd be massive demonstration too.

I would love to wait in line for that. It looks so good.

😂 ah,maybe that's why people wait in line tooo. But for real, the taste though is actually good! they also have assorted dumplings and there's something called Fried Cheese Shrimp Dumplings which is recommended too.

ppl still wearing masks? dafuq

sadly.... yes 😂 must be triple vax to travel tooo..........................

Tripple, key brutal.

It looks delicious. Perfect for the cold weather.

😃 It is! we have constant downpour but if I were to choose something else, that'd be any hot soup noodle instead that one.

Healthy food healthy life

Wow I didn’t expect that it could be turned out this way, you got a very special price. The things is that the restaurant provides such a good Noodles. It even cheap compared to all the restaurants in my city.

How much would those noodle cost?

I'd be sure to check this place out when I get the chance to visit Indonesia. I am intrigued!

@glecerioberto hahah for sure. They are often available nearby universities so it's a bit on the city and not on the tourist side. But if you ever come to Indonesia, there's one in Bali just on the way to famous surf spot.
