Today I'm going to show you a dish that has been part of my life since I was a little kid. For us it has been a normal dish, nothing special. Our grandmothers have been making it, our mum as well and this has been going on for generations.
Over the years, with all the processed food, things have changed. Now you can buy it from the grocery store, frozen and have it ready in 20 minutes as the cooking time takes about 18 minutes, plus making the breadcrumbs ready takes 2 or 3 minutes. As life is a constant rush and I'm not any better than others, I've been choosing the shortcut and have been buying frozen ones.
Today I wanted to show you how it's done, but before I started my post, I thought let's check the history of these famous dumplings. I was amazed by what I found on Wikipedia.
Knedle (from German knödel, "dumpling"), is a dish of boiled potato-dough dumplings filled with plums or apricots, originating in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Popular in Central and Eastern European countries, the dish is eaten as dessert, a main dish, or side dish.
It is known as plum dumplings in English, and in other languages as: Austrian German: Zwetschkenknödel, German: Zwetschgenknödel, Hungarian: szilvásgombóc, Serbo-Croatian: Knedle od šljiva, Knedle or alternatively Gomboce in Vojvodina, Slovene: slivovi cmoki, Slovak: slivkové knedle, Czech: švestkové knedlíky, Polish: Knedle ze śliwkami, Romanian: Găluște/Gomboți cu prune.
The dough is made with mashed potatoes, eggs, and flour. The dough is flattened out and cut into squares. The plums (or apricots) are inserted inside the dumplings by hand. Some versions of the dish use noodles instead of potatoes. The preparation can include removing the stone and stuffing the fruit with sugar. The plums are then completely wrapped in dough and dropped in boiling water. When they start floating, they are taken out, sprinkled with sugar, and served. They can also be served with breadcrumbs fried in butter and dusted in powdered sugar. source
Unfortunately I was in a hurry and had no time to take a nice photo of the ingredients, but you know all of them listed below, there's no secret ingredient here :)
Ingredients:
- 1kg potatoes,
- all purpose flour as much as it's needed,
- 1 egg,
- 1 pinch salt,
- 1 tbs olive oil
- 1kg plums,
- breadcrumbs,
- sugar,
- cinnamon.
The method is very simple. Once the potatoes are cold, pealed and mashed, add one egg, a pinch of salt and as much flour as it requires to get a soft dough.
Roll out the dough, to be 1cm thick, not more.
Depending how big the plums are, cut out squares to cover the plums.
Mine were big, so I made the square a bit bigger.
Make a mix with the sugar and cinnamon, fill the plums after the seeds are taken out (obviously).
Make a ball by close the dough around the plums.
Add a little oil to the boiling water and cook the dumplings for 30 minutes.
Brown the breadcrumbs in a pan and then roll the dumplings, to coat them with breadcrumbs.
Serve while still hot and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
I have to warn you, once you taste it, you can become addicted to it, that's how good it is 😀
Tips:
You can substitute plums with peaches, or add any kind of fruit, that is not soft. You can also use Nutella cream, as long as you close the dumplings well, to avoid leaking during cooking, or use chocolate.
Seeing in how many countries is this dish known, I would be tempted to tag a few Hivers, to ask them if they know this dish, but tagging people is not my style, unless the house is burning, so I'm just hoping they are going to comment and let me know.
Sooo, who's up to some dumpling tasting? Who's brave enough? 😀

Szilvás gombóc!!!
Can you just, please, somehow send me some?
Just one?
No?
ok... :(
I am going to cry a bit now...
🤣🤣🤣
Bizony, Szilvás gombóc!!! De még milyen finom!!! 😂
You're a bit late to the party, but trust me, I was thinking of you while eating! I was thinking how good it is that you're not here, otherwise you would eat it all and leave me hungry 🤣🤣
Honestly, I would send you some gladly, but for that, someone needs to invent teleportation first.
You are thinking about me when you see a piano... also when you eat all those delicious dishes I can't have here... I bet you are having a smile on your face while having mipiano in your mind...
well, thank you! 😤
lol
🤗
🤣🤣🤣
Well, I am definitely thinking of you every time I see a piano, or am listening to an organ concert, as that's your department 😇
😇
I wasn't expecting this to be boiled, I thought it would be deep fried. But then if it's an old recipe boiling would make perfect sense. Just finished dinner and am reading this, it looks quite heavy...
You won't see deep frying in my kitchen as it would make it more unhealthier. It is not heavy, but you can't eat more than 3, unless you know no measure when it comes to eating.
Boiling is not because it's an old recipe, but because you can't fry them as the dough can't be thin enough to be fried.
@erikah wowow looks good! never thought of it. We do not have any dish in combination of potato and sugar. But i like trying different and unique dishes so this one looks something different and I wanna know how it tastes. Thank you for sharing!!!
Potato is like a base for the dough. We have noodles made with potato.
You can try it out and let me know.
@erikah I will ask my Mother for this but I know the answer in advance : what type of combination is this > sugar and potato?
If I succeed, will surely let you know and share a post of the same....
Please let your mother know that dding potato to the dough is a common practice in Europe and even 5* chefs doing it. Not to mention the famous Italian cuisine.
The other point you can make is that gastronomy has been able to develop this far due to experimenting, trying out new things. Otherwise you will never discover anything.
let me know 😂 I'm really curious.
hahaha yeah sure, will give it a try and will share the outcome.....
Dear, @erikah.
Even though you say this recipe is a hereditary recipe, it is now widely traded. But, for me, this is something new.
In my place, it is not customary to add prunes to the flour mixture. Every flour should always be dealing with something sweet. But, I will give it a try. It was so refreshing when the plum broke in my mouth, and that was the "enlightenment" of the taste I was about to receive.
Have a great day.
Every region, every country, every continent has its own culinary beauties but since the internet exists, there are no boundaries anymore. So everything is possible. We all learn and try out new things.
Aww, švestkové knedlíky! I love them! We even have a pretty famous national eating competition with this food. The current champion managed to eat 205 plum dumplings in one hour :)
@tipu curate
I was counting on you to see if you have this dish but of course you know it 😃
I see the knedlíky is similar to other languages the article mentions.
As about the record holder, that's just sheer stupid. I like contests, but eating till you get sick is just stupid. I am wondering how that "champion" felt the next day 😳
Right. I´m known as a very avid eater who really eats a lot but I haven´t participated in any eating contest and I´m not planning to do that. Eating till you get sick is quite disgusting and it´s also a waste of food in a way, which is something I hate. I mentioned the contest just to illustrate how popular this meal is in my country ;) Most Czech people totally love the plum dumplings.
I understand that and no worries, was never my intention to criticize.
You are right though, about the food waste. I've seen contests where after the contest finished, most of the contestants threw the food up.
Dumplings are popular here too :)

Seen from the photos and the steps of making this cake it seems very delicious and sweet, maybe if I try it I will be addicted like you said, hahaha :D
Btw, this is my first time seeing this cake, because Plums are not/rare in my area.
You can use other fruits as well, as long as it is not something soft. You can use peaches for example, I saw dumpling recipes with peaches. Or use Nutella, as long as you close the dumplings well, or a piece of chocolate.
I should have added these tips to the post.
Yep, seems interesting to try.
Yes you have to tell the people who want to plan to make the cake.😁
I love these!
If I remember correctly who you are, the I suppose you have these in Poland. Am I right? 😀
Yep, we call these knedle here, however I believe these arw not much popular.
My mother used to made knedle with a whole plum inside, sprinkled woth sugar, however stuffing it with sugar seems really interesting. I need to try.
Actually, when living in Krakow, sweet pierogi with fruit reminded me of these plum dumplings :) Here in Czechia, plum dumplings are the most common and popular version but we also use apricots and strawberries as the fillings sometimes.
Apricot is much less popular in Poland, but I'll definitely try it!
I remember while travelling via Czech Republic, apricot stands were really common in southern regions. It's just a wild guess, but these might be slight climate differences I wouldn't pay attention to otherwise so close to my country. It was a region south from Brno.
I think you are actually right with your theory. Apricots are definitely much more common in the (sunny) southern parts of the country, especially in South Moravia (which is where Brno is located) than in the northern regions so I can imagine that up there in Poland, apricots are grown only very rarely... But you should really try these apricot dumplings, they are fantastic :)
There are all kinds of combinations and I'm glad you know this dish. Good luck :)
Looks good & I’m up for a dumpling taste, ready to risk it😂
I can’t really access plums or peach fruit here so the Nutella is fine for me to substitute
It’s a must try for me🤭
You can choose other fruits, as long as those are not too soft.
Right.
Something I could even make and experiment with various fruits like apricots, nectarines and peaches. I will let you know but afraid I may look like a dumpling if I like them.
All those fruits would be perfect for filling.
You don't have to eat like a 🐷 😂
This is definitely going to be really tasty 😋 . I’m definitely going to try this soon. Thanks for sharing☺️☺️
I hope you're going to like it!
These look absolutely delicious. And the colors are also very attractive. I definitely want to try one. I saved the link to this post so we can try them together when I go to my girlfriend's house.
Good luck and let me know how it turned out. Also enjoy!
Can’t say I know the dish. What I do know is my mouth would be drooling if I saw that and I’d probably choke on it trying to gobble it up as fast as I can, as much as I can:)
😂😂😂 I can guarantee you that!
This looks a yummy snack.. Im not a fan of plum but it looks good to try
After cooking, plums have a different taste and with the coating, I'm sure you'll like it.
Sure I'll try it. Just need to look for plums 🤣.. Im only seeing dried and fermented plums here..😅
Count me in, I would definitely would love to try it out if only I could just take it out of the picture😂😂. But I will surely try it at home here.
I wish I could send you some or you could download the dumplings into your plate 😂

This look delicious and it’s my first time seeing this kind of dish😁.
There's a first for everyone, it looks like this is yours :)
I do not really know this dish or snack but the preparation is sure tempting and it will taste really good... Love the delicious Pink finish 😍😍
It's never too late to try it out :)
I'll see to that 🤗🤗😍
this dough on potatoes we call zrazy and start mostly not sweet fillings meat Minced meat or greens with onions. but in order for the filling to be sweet this surprise for me will need to try
Basically the potato dough is neutral in taste, so you can use it with any filling. I'm glad to hear you have this dough too as quite many have never heard of it. Let me know how it was if you decide to try it out :)
Szilvás gombóc!!! Love it, and your pics just make me want to have some right now! This is also the right season (in Europe) to make them with fresh plums instead of plum jam. Btw, this delicious dish was also one of my first food posts. Except for I used cinnamon inside the plums, leaving out the sugar entirely.
