Missing Food Wanted

This year hasn't been exactly what most of us had envisioned before the pandemic. There were a lot of adjustments made to accommodate to the new guidelines and whatnot. My state isn't as strict as some of its neighbors, and it feels like the result is comparable to those who do.

Since the supply chain and life as we know it are no longer a thing, I've missed a few things. In particular, an old favorite that I can no longer find in the local Asian market.

That's right, I miss the Tung-I instant rice noodle (統一肉燥米粉). I've known it since I was a kid living in Taiwan with my grandparents. It's so simple, yet so tasty. I'm willing to bet that the main reason I could not find them anymore is because it'd cost more to import from Taiwan.

If you look on Amazon, you could tell people are charging an arm and a leg for these delicious little packages. For context, each package cost about $0.70 each before they disappeared from the market.

Are there alternatives? The answer is no. I was even more surprised to see that I couldn't find some Mainland knockoff or Korean copycat in the stores. It's somewhat strange that this item is so unique to the point no one bothered to copy it. Or, I'm one of the few people left in the world who actually enjoy it.

Well, one could dream. When this is all behind us, I may find this rice noodle again. Then, I will make sure to load up for my own personal enjoyment.

Awww... I know how it is to miss food!!!
There are some dishes that I miss from home,
and I have learned to cook them.

I don't think I know how to replicate the exact flavour of this particular product.

Will have to look into it.

That sucks that you can't get it anymore. Maybe once things get a little better it will show up again. I know when the pandemic first hit all of the Ramen brand noodles were selling out from the store.

Yeah, hopefully. There aren't really many empty shelves in Asian markets around here though.

I never seen this particular flavour before. Taiwan does some really awesome noodles, really miss them

Best rice noodles are in Hsinchu (新竹).

Is that where you're from? 埔里 ones are also very good

I've lived there for a decade yeah.

My son likes Minute Maid lemonade, but it is no longer available as they have had a shortage of aluminum and cut back on the drinks that sell the least. You can still find it in a 2 liter bottle though some of the time.

In the meantime, has he found a substitute, or he just deals with it?

Just been drinking water, he isn't into soda.

Probably better that way.

야~! 이~! 샵샵놈아~! 써억 꺼저랏~!

I don't know, some hoard alcohol and toilet paper, maybe some just want to hoard noodles. Never seen this type of noodles before. Our nation loves to import SEA insta-noodles of sorts, most common brands are from Japan.

It's a classic in Taiwan. But yes, Korean and Japanese goods seem to be more common in Asian markets here too.
