South Cebu Best Pit Stops: The Boundary Café and Restaurant in Alcantara

in Foodies Bee Hive3 years ago (edited)

I heard about a place called The Boundary through neighbors and friends. The new café-resto sits on the Southern Cebu National Highway a stone throw away from the welcome arches marking the border of two rural towns; Moalboal and Alcantara in the Philippines.

This inspired me to do a linked post series called South Cebu Best Pit Stops that features delicious places to eat located along or near the highway. These pit stops will guarantee a perfect tummy-filling stopover, a good leg stretch after a long drive with (wait for it) a clean restroom while on a road trip down south of the Cebu island.

The Boundary Café and Restaurant serves authentic regional Filipino Cuisine. Friends living in our small town made it a weekly habit to dine here since its opening last December 2021. Residents take a 10-minute drive from Moalboal to unwind for an afternoon coffee or even an intentional trip alone to indulge in a me-time dinner.

On a long 3-hour car journey to Moalboal from Cebu City, the well-lit restaurant stands out against the dark countryside area. The kind that pulls your eyes away from the road while your heightened curiosity tempts you to pull over.

Spherical abaca and capiz lanterns are suspended throughout the main floor and open balcony teeming with diners enjoying their hot meal. The parking space is often packed with 4x4 vehicles. The light emanating from the lanterns captures attention and lures even those who had no plans of dining there. Sometimes you'll catch a few tunes played by a live band on weekend nights.

Where is it?

View of the Parks Resort from The Boundary Balcony

Our first attempt for a lunch stopover several weeks ago was unsuccessful. It was so busy, there was no space for our small tuk-tuk to park.

Yesterday, on our way back home from roofing repairs around brunch time, we were able to grab a parking spot squeezed in front of a tree opposite two big vehicles.

It was a bustling Saturday and arriving at half-past 11 secured a table on a patio on the ground floor. The balcony tables were already packed with families. I asked for permission to capture these images and waited for diners to leave before taking photographs of the restaurant's interior.

We were seated and the friendly staff handed over menus. For ease of order taking, guests can scan the QR code. I chose to take pictures of the menu to share here.

Starters & Selection of Vegetarian Choices

Appetizer and Vegetarian Choices

We picked Krispy Kangkong, deep-fried water spinach fritters for starters. My daughter who hates veggies refused to eat it at first but couldn't get enough of it after the first bite.

Crispy Spinach fritters, great for kids aversive to veggies

I had a sudden craving for Utan Bisaya which is one of their bestsellers that I had for the main course.

Otan Bisaya, The Boundary

Utan is a regional dish which is a soup bowl of boiled locally grown vegetables such as alugbati (our local vine spinach), okra (lady's fingers or gumbo), tomatoes, ginger, green onions, eggplant, squash, long green pepper, malunggay (moringa leaves), and a few night vegetables. It's a healthy and nutritious dish. Their version has bits of tinapa for added flavor.

Beverage

While waiting, we ordered a refreshingly cold Mixed Fruits Delight Pitcher. The juice had calamansi (Philippine Lime), watermelon, and mandarins.

The swing sets kept us company and the greenery that surrounded the dining area. My curiosity led me to a small wooden backdoor of the property with a small footbridge above a narrow canal. Diners were oblivious to the fact that behind the wall of greenery was a vast open field.

The existence of the play area made it child-friendly and ideal for families. Plant lovers are distracted by the varieties of plants on display. Even their vanity washbasin is garden-themed.

We didn't wait long. Our order arrived shortly after we finished the starter.

Main Course and Dessert

Main Course and Dessert Menu

My husband and daughter ordered unlimited plain rice and melt-in-your-mouth tender Beefsteak Tagalog which they thoroughly enjoyed.

We ordered an extra plate of mixed noodles called Bam-i to share.

Bam-I Noodles

A meal isn't complete without sampling their dessert. They take pride in their different types of cheesecakes but if binignit and banana turon are right up your alley, they have those as well.

Mango Cheesecake

Blueberry Cheesecake

All three of us shared the mango and blueberry cheesecakes on graham crusts. Of course, dessert is incomplete without ordering a freshly brewed cup of black coffee. We asked for the bill afterward equivalent to about Php 1490 (USD$ 28.70) excluding the service charge. We left a 10% tip.

Allow Php 500 (USD$ 10) per person for a three-course meal and a minimum budget of around Php 300 (USD$ 6) per person.

I went upstairs to take pictures of the balcony as soon as most guests left but the staff was still tidying up the plates, so I didn't. We had an accidental encounter with french friends based in the city who were in town this weekend for a meeting.

Highway and Alcantara Landscape View

They are quite selective and admittedly picky with food but they became regulars whenever they're in the south. We briefly caught up while they waited for their orders and learned that they frequently order Monggo sa Gata (Mung beans in creamy coconut) and Pork Sisig with unlimited rice.

My Takeaway

Since their launch late last year, they've quickly built a strong following towards their vision of being a "Pride of the South" communicated through their branding and good customer service. The food was delicious. The Boundary has a convenient location, pleasing ambiance, and good value for money. I might just become a regular here.

Thank you for reading and have a lovely weekend!

Best Pit Stops that features delicious places to eat located along or near the highway

That's a cool idea. It's like your own Michelin Guide. Lol

The food and atmosphere look really nice. I like the swinging chairs. Those are cool. The water spinach fritters look interesting as well. I've never had them but would definitely try them if I could.

Haha, something like that but will never in the slightest stress out the chefs and the kitchen Lol.

Driving home and stopping to try out different places provided the opportunity over the years. Some are open while some restaurants are closed because of the pandemic and the typhoon. I will be on the lookout for some new ones seeing that tourism is starting to flourish here again and update the ones I've written about before whether they're still operational.

I used to make the water spinach fritters at home. To create the batter, ingredients are just gluten-free cornstarch, ice-cold water, baking powder, salt, and pepper (garlic powder optional) each batter-covered leaf is fried in really hot olive oil or air fried. They're just quite tedious to prepare one by one but deliciously good.

Hope your weekend is treating you well.

Seems good value for money. The place seems suitable for even “picnic” for family :)

Oh the desserts 😍 mouthwatering

Hi Anggrek, yes it is 😊 ideal for the whole family. The more the merrier and more economical kind of setup. We're glad to finally try it even though we've limited going out this year in our attempt to spend more wisely. My next-door neighbor raves about the vegetable soup and now I understand why she likes it very much. I usually am okay with coffee but I just couldn't resist the cheesecakes. Hope you're having a lovely Sunday 😊

In here, many people looking for the restaurant like that too. Needed more natural ambience 😊

Have a great Sunday ❤️

That's a good sign. Great to know that's the diners' behavior there now. People have become more aware of the connection between natural environments and well-being since the pandemic. After being cooped up in towers and apartments, the craving for more green spaces intensified. The whole shift poured over choices of restaurants as well. That's an interesting observation and something to consider by people planning to invest in F&B business as well.

Wow, the place looks so amazing! The foods look delicious too!

Based on the menu, which dish would you immediately go for and order? I think I might try the mung beans in creamy coconut next time. That looked delicious and the serving was in a huge bowl. Made me hungry just commenting about that so I might cook that today hehe.

It will also be Bam-i, you also made me hungry just by mentioning mung beans in creamy coconut. I might as well going to cook it tomorrow.

Wow. They have crispy kangkong. I !LUV this. Good to know that they have vegetarian options on their menu. 🙂

That's a good point, there's limited vegetarian choices in most places so it's cool to have several items on their menu that diners can keep coming back to try. Their crispy kangkong was spot on crispy and really enjoyed them.

Paborito ko yan. I cook it at home whenever fresh kangkong is available. 😁

It just takes time to prepare at home but a really good crunchy meal.

What a lovely place, the environment seems so great and all of the food look so amazing too! i really crave for that Beefsteak & the Bam-i noodles, must be so delish! thanks for sharing 😊

Hi Karca, I think you'll enjoy them. The mix of vermicelli noodles and pancit canton, a thicker type of noodle makes it interesting. It's a tasty Central Visayan dish that would be worth a try when visiting the island. Thanks for dropping by and wishing you a great week ahead!

I have never tried the phillipine cuisine. The dish "Krispy Kangkong" looks very nicely prepared, deep fried water spinach fritters sound exciting. And it's really cheap, 10 dollars for a three course meal, that's really very good!

Yes, it's inexpensive eating out here. I'm sure you'd find a dish you might like because you strike me as someone adventurous to try things. Philippine Cuisine to me is a melange of sweet, savory, and sour flavors often fatty prepared in different colonial and authentic cultural styles. Each region has its own take. Depending on which area you visit, you'd find a varied version.

that sounds interesting, yes there will be definitely something, i like to try new things, and i like it when there are several flavors like sweet sour salty in one dish.. i think i need to visit many areas haha

Hey Arni, nice photos. I had two little rice pots like those. The food, desserts, and presentation look amazing. They take pride. so I hope the restaurant will do well.
Anaïs looks so much taller!😍

Oh really? Those are really nice little rice pots! Where did you buy them? It's impressive how they established patrons so quickly. It shows they have nailed many things right particularly the palate.

She's growing up too fast. 😊

I bought the pots at Gaisano Town Center Moalboal (the new one). They are downstairs near to hardware center on the bottom shelf to the side. If I remember they were fairly cheap. I thought they were attractive and I asked a group of older Filipinas and they told me they were for rice. Sometimes I'd serve stews or soup in them. One for me and one for Cameron. I like it because it was like cooking a whole pot of food for someone 🤣

They're so cute! Wow, you have a sharp eye because I have passed that aisle countless times and didn't notice.

Yeah, if I remember well, they were about Php 52.00. I hope they still have them. They also have the small ones for cooking single eggs...those I got from the other Gaisano:)

Ah so cool you remembered the price. Will explore that part of Gaisano during my next trip to the supermarket.

Yeah you might be surprised what by what you could find:)

What an great restaurant that must be! It's so awesome that they even have a greenery area. We just had dinner and looking at the food photos made me hungry again, lol!

Haha, thanks for the compliment 😃 It's fast becoming a favorite among the locals and foreign residents, and tourists. The lack of parking might become an issue as their popularity rises but I'm sure people will adjust to that as long as their standards continue.
