FOODlog #607: 'Bak Chang' aka Chinese Dumpling

Had these 'Bak Chang' or also known as Chinese Dumplings yesterday for dinner. Its not those dumplings that you get at a 'dim sum' restaurant but these are also called dumplings. There are savory types and sweet types but the one that's most popular is the savory dumplings.

It's glutinous rice that's be stuffed with five spiced pork belly, mushrooms, and salted egg yolk. It's also stuffed with a variation of some sort of beans or nuts such as black eyed beans or chestnuts. This one that I had was with black eyed beans which is what I normally prefer as I think the flavors blend well with everything else.

These are all wrapped up in bamboo leaves and tied with strings that's also made from the bamboo leaves. They are then steamed to cook sort of like Mexican 'Tamales'. If you're familiar with Tamales, the preparation and techniques are very much like 'Bak Chang'.

When they are cooking and steaming, unwrap these little packages and enjoy.

Wow. My fav!! I love Tamales too. Just had them for dinner.

Ooo awesome. Never had tamales but they do look similar. Haha

I loved bak chang but it is getting more and more expensive. In Kuching, you need to pay around 5 ringgit for a decent bak chang.
