A tasty bad sad reality

I'm at my in-laws in Thuringia, Germany, right now, and this is a photo of some cake we ate yesterday. All tasty, of course! But there's unfortunately also a sad side to this story.

The baker, one of the few independent handicraft bakers around, will soon retire. None of his kids wants to continue the family business (which has been around almost 100 years!), and he's therefore planning on closing his shop.

I see this more and more, where the small, skilled craftsmen disappear in favour of the big, mass-produced chains. I do what I can to support them, but if nobody wants to continue the work, it's just a matter of time anyway.

How do you support your local magicians (well, what they are doing is magic to me!) and do you see a possible comeback for the small bakeries and shops, or will we only see the big chains and their mass-produced stuff in the future?
