TUSLO BUWA

One Saturday afternoon, my previous students messaged me via Facebook Messenger for a hangout because they got bored in their house. I was also bored at that time so I invited them to our house for a Videoke session for as long as they are fully vaccinated. They said they would arrive at 4 PM.

So, I set up our TV, amplifier, microphone, and speaker for our afternoon hangout. I decided not to use the Videoke player because it is a hassle. I always prefer using wifi and Youtube because it is convenient and fast. Before they all arrived, I already finished preparing everything.

As soon as they arrived at the house, we started our Videoke session. We also talked about the funny things while they were still under my advisory and Drafting class, their college lives now during the pandemic, and their dreams and ambitions.

It was 6 PM when I already noticed that I was already hungry. I did not prepare food for us because I do not think it was practical and convenient. So, I asked them if they were okay if we went out for a while to eat "TUSLO BUWA". They smiled and said, "Sure, Sir!".

WHAT IS "TUSLO BUWA" ?

The "TUSLO BUWA" food stall is just a five-minute walk from our house. It is owned by my previous advisory student also and his girlfriend. Yes, my student owns it! 😍

  • TUSLO means "TO DIP"
  • BUWA means "BUBBLE"

"TUSLO BUWA" is a Filipino street viand originated in Cebu, particularly in Pasil, Cebu. I am not sure if there are already versions of this viand in other parts of the country, but surely there are so many food stalls of "TUSLO BUWA" in different places in Cebu giving it their own versions too.

HOW TO COOK A "TUSLO BUWA" ?

We ordered 2 sets of "TUSLO BUWA" which costs 145 PHP. Each set includes 10 pieces of "PUSO" or rice and a pitcher of iced tea. Immediately when our orders were placed on the table, Michael and Jared led the cooking of the TUSLO BUWA.

PROCEDURES:

  1. Heat the pan.
  2. Put cooking oil in the pan.
  3. Saute the spices (green onions and pepper).
  4. Cook the pork ground meat and sliced pork liver.
  5. Pour the seasoned pork brain paste (main ingredient).
  6. Add soy sauce.
  7. Enjoy!

Usually, the fire is put to very low so that it continues to boil so there is a continued appearance of bubbles or "BUWA" then you get your "PUSO" or rice and dip it into the boiling viand. However, we chose to put off the fire for safety reasons.

IS "TUSLO BUWA" WORTH TRYING?

If you are not from Cebu or a Cebuano who have not tried eating TUSLO BUWA, I am inviting you to try it. It is very tasty and very Filipino. I am sure it will be considered soon as one of the popular Filipino street food like "Balut". However, you have to be very careful about who you are sharing the food with to prevent illnesses.

We were only five but we ate all the two sets and even added 10 more extra "PUSO" because it was really delicious. Also sharing food with friends and family is very fun and very Filipino. That is why I really recommend it to everyone. My brother also bought one set and cooked it at home, and my three nephews really enjoyed it. Look at their reactions while eating this in the video. 😍

So, what are you waiting for? Try "TUSLO BUWA" now! Experience CEBU with "TUSLO BUWA".
