A Little Piece of Venezuela: Arepa de Domino [ESP/ING]

El día de hoy estoy realizando mi entrada para el concurso propuesto por @ocd en una comunidad donde ya he interactuando muchísimo: Foodies Bee Hive, así que siguiendo la temática de este concurso les hablare sobre una comida típica de mi país: Venezuela, esta es la arepa de domino. Para información general las caraotas suelen acompañarse de arroz y carne, este es el denominado pabellón criollo pero eso no quiere decir que sea la única manera de comerlo, de hecho las caraotas se pueden combinar de diferentes maneras según la región. Por otro lado la arepa es una de las comidas que no pueden faltar en la mesa de un venezolano, suele comerse comúnmente con queso, jamón y mantequilla pero la verdad es que solemos rellenarlas con diferentes cosas, ejemplo perfecto las caraotas. Y para dar un toque el queso rallado.

La arepa domino es la combinación de estas tres cosas mencionadas, es tradicional de Venezuela, tanto así que es un plato que se planifica en familia, como en mi caso este día, por su cotidianidad se hace fácil de realizar por eso es que decidí prepararla aquí en casa, solo necesitamos nuestra harina precocida, un poco de sal, agua, las caraotas ya guisadas y quesito blanco. Como en todos los países la comida varía de estado en estado, particularmente en el Estado Sucre las caraotas se le agrega azúcar, para que haya un rico contraste, a la hora de rellenar nuestras arepas luego de hacer nuestra masa y cocinarlas estas caraotas se calientan con un poquito de mantequilla o aceite, se agrega en la arepa con mucho quesito. Y listo aquí esta nuestra arepa domino.

Today I am making my entry for the contest proposed by @ocd in a community where I have already interacted a lot: Foodies Bee Hive, so following the theme of this contest I will talk about a typical food of my country: Venezuela, this is the arepa de domino. For general information caraotas are usually accompanied by rice and meat, this is the so-called pabellon criollo but that does not mean that it is the only way to eat it, in fact caraotas can be combined in different ways depending on the region. On the other hand the arepa is one of the foods that can not miss on the table of a Venezuelan, it is commonly eaten with cheese, ham and butter but the truth is that we usually fill them with different things, perfect example the caraotas. And to add a touch of grated cheese.

The arepa domino is the combination of these three things mentioned, it is traditional in Venezuela, so much so that it is a dish that is planned in family, as in my case this day, because of its daily routine it is easy to make that is why I decided to prepare it here at home, we only need our precooked flour, a little salt, water, the cooked beans and white cheese. As in all countries the food varies from state to state, particularly in the State of Sucre the beans are added sugar, so that there is a rich contrast, when filling our arepas after making our dough and cook these beans are heated with a little butter or oil, is added in the arepa with lots of cheese. And ready here is our arepa domino.

La arepa la podemos conseguir en diferentes variedades pero yo quise presentarles esta porque es de mis favoritas, se llama domino por la combinación de colores, puesto que la caraota es negra y el queso blanco. Las personas entonces recuerdan las clásicas piezas de domino en estos colores, el cual también es un juego tradicional del país aunque su origen no proviene de aquí, sino más bien de la mezcla entre culturas. Este aspecto me parece muy interesante porque aquí podemos ver la manera en la que los seres humanos asociamos las tradiciones del lugar donde crecemos y colocamos nombres a estas comidas por estos mismos momentos que vivimos, al final se trata de una composición de factores que asociamos como personas.

Esta arepa domino es cotidiana en cualquier restaurante o puesto de comida, antes de la pandemia cuando ibas camino a la playa o algún lugar turístico podías ver como vendían este tipo de arepas, con la finalidad de que los turistas probaran a través de la comida un poco de nuestra gastronomía.

The arepa is available in different varieties but I wanted to introduce you to this one because it is one of my favorites, it is called domino because of the combination of colors, since the caraota is black and the cheese is white. People then remember the classic dominoes in these colors, which is also a traditional game of the country although its origin does not come from here, but rather from the mixture of cultures. This aspect seems very interesting to me because here we can see the way in which human beings associate the traditions of the place where we grow up and we name these foods for these same moments that we live, in the end it is a composition of factors that we associate as people.

This arepa domino is daily in any restaurant or food stand, before the pandemic when you were on your way to the beach or any tourist place you could see how they sold this type of arepas, in order that tourists could taste through food a little of our gastronomy.

Particularmente me encanta este plato porque me recuerda cuando era más pequeña y mis abuelas las preparaban, creo que lo más curioso de la comida es que nos transporta a revivir momentos de nuestra vida y a mi esta arepa me encanta. Además creo que todos los venezolanos podemos decidir que consumimos arepa en todas sus formas pero cuando lo hacemos con otra comida típica como las caraotas nos encanta, de alguna y otra forma se toma otra intención, una muy especial.

Actualmente Venezuela atraviesa una dura situación social, económica, política y cultural, esto es de conocimiento a nivel mundial y es que es un aspecto negativo pero como en todo hay cosas buenas, porque con la diáspora que se ha dado de ciudadanos venezolanos se ha hecho una mezcla interesante de culturas y por supuesto mis paisanos intentan crear fuentes económicas y por eso ahora en muchísimas partes del mundo hablan de la arepa, y en especial de la arepa domino, porque es algo innovador y que causa curiosidad. Este ejemplo es perfecto para explicar que la comida, los juegos y la cultura de un país no tienen barreras y que se disfruta sin importar la nacionalidad que llevemos, todos podemos adoptar costumbres de otras regiones y eso hace muy rico nuestro aprendizaje.

I particularly love this dish because it reminds me of when I was younger and my grandmothers used to prepare them, I think the most curious thing about food is that it transports us to relive moments of our life and I love this arepa. I also think that all Venezuelans can decide that we consume arepa in all its forms but when we do it with another typical food like caraotas we love it, somehow and another way it takes another intention, a very special one.

Currently Venezuela is going through a hard social, economic, political and cultural situation, this is known worldwide and it is a negative aspect but as in everything there are good things, because with the diaspora that has occurred of Venezuelan citizens has made an interesting mix of cultures and of course my countrymen try to create economic sources and that is why now in many parts of the world talk about the arepa, and especially the arepa domino, because it is something innovative and that causes curiosity. This example is perfect to explain that the food, games and culture of a country have no barriers and can be enjoyed regardless of nationality, we can all adopt customs from other regions and that makes our learning very rich.

Si bien es cierto que Venezuela hay una amplia variedad de comidas típicas hay unas que resaltan mucho más que otras, porque más personas se inclinan en el gusto de la misma, la arepa domino es una de las favoritas de los venezolanos porque es una asociación con momentos felices y comida rica, es una comida pesada, soy una persona que come bastante bastante y con una arepa de estas sacio mi hambre.

Esta es la comida típica que he elegido porque me encanta el contraste que se hace entre lo dulce de las caraotas y lo salado del queso, además que las caraotas es una de mis comidas favoritas al igual que la arepa, entonces mezclarlo es buenísimo. Me disfruto mucho hablar de comida y este post fue una gran excusa para comerme esta arepa y si les soy sincera, sentí que me comía un pedazo de mi país.

While it is true that Venezuela has a wide variety of typical foods there are some that stand out much more than others, because more people are inclined in the taste of it, the arepa domino is one of the favorites of Venezuelans because it is an association with happy moments and rich food, it is a heavy meal, I am a person who eats a lot and with an arepa of these I satisfy my hunger.

This is the typical food that I have chosen because I love the contrast between the sweetness of the beans and the salty cheese, plus the beans are one of my favorite foods as well as the arepa, so mixing them is great. I really enjoy talking about food and this post was a great excuse to eat this arepa and if I'm honest, I felt like I was eating a piece of my country.
