I had heard quite a bit about The Cupping Room in Canberra... supposedly, it is the place in the Civic area where you can get the best coffee. Well, I did have a coffee here recently... and it was decent, but nowhere near the best that I have had in Canberra. But I guess all the people who live in the high land value areas near Civic need to have a place that is hyped up... but the best coffees that I have had in this town are in the outer areas!
But I have never eaten here, and so for a recent birthday breakfast, we decided that we would try this place out... we arrived soon after it opened in the morning, as it is quite popular with the inner city crowd and there would be queues if we arrived any later!
The Space
The space is airy, open, and modern... sort of what you would expect from a inner city trendy cafe. Nothing wrong with it, but now it is pretty stereotypical! Sadly, we didn't get an edge table... I like having my back to something, and not being in the middle of the room!
The Menu
Lots of interesting selections from the menu... I suspect that a good chunk of the menu was more for lunch... I'm not sure that I would want to start the day with pasta... although, I was almost tempted! It does sound pretty tasty!
The Food
My wife ordered the "Avocado", a vegetarian option from the breakfast menu... pretty hearty, but very tasty! Somewhere in there is an actual avocado.
My kids ordered the French Toast... there was a kiddie version, but it was pretty bare bones... the full adult version had sorbet, custard, and pavlova slices. Well, I would definitely not want the bare bones kiddie version either... who could blame them!
And the French toast was done with brioche... just in case the whole thing wasn't sweet enough...
I ended up ordering a breakfast roll... it was decent, but these oily things tend to disagree with me. I'm not even sure why I ordered it... next time, French Toast! Well, I did end up eating half the French Toast dishes anyway... like most parents do when their kids order an adult meal.
So, the coffee... a flat white... decent, but not amazing. Honestly, I would rather go to the places that I already know that aren't hyped up... but serve up better and cheaper coffee.
The babycinos were okay, and the sprinkles were a nice touch! Our kids want to make them at home in the small cappuccino cups now!
... and finally, a watermelon drink... very refreshing!
The Experience
The Cupping Place is a pretty decent place to eat... although, I would have to say that it is a decent but slightly overhyped place. There are many places that also serve up a better coffee, and a decent feed as well. In the end, it was a nice and special birthday experience... but it wouldn't be the place that I would go in the ordinary course of events.
