Roses Cafe: Goulburn, AUSTRALIA

Roses Cafe: Goulburn, AUSTRALIA.jpg

It was a pretty blustery and freezing winter's day when I pulled into Goulburn, a regional centre that lies on the road between Canberra and Sydney. Normally, I would travel further along the road before stopping for a break... but this time, my destination was actually Goulburn!

... and after doing what it was that I came here for, I decided to stop into a cafe that was the promised reward for one of my daughters who accompanied me on this mini-road trip! Sadly, the place that we had scouted out the night before was closed... and so, we agreed on this interesting looking place after a quick Google search for decent cafes in the area.

The Space

Located just off one of the main road arteries, it was quite easy find parking close by on the main street... and walking into this large well heated area was such a relief after walking through the freezing wind that just cut through our clothes!

It is a beautiful dining setting... lots of space, well lit, and great spacing between tables. And so warm... so very very warm!

The Menu

Lots of the food was on display, deli style.... and there was a stupendous array of choices on offer... from pies and lasagnas (that was about the size of a large wedding cake!) though to salads and pastas... and then finishing up on the right with cakes and tarts!

Wow, were both a bit stunned for choice... but we did end up settling on things... plus, picking up a couple of tarts to have for dessert... and also to share with the two poops who stayed at home instead of joining us on the road trip.

The Food

My daughter chose the lasagna option... a nice meat filling that wasn't too runny, but with perhaps a touch too much parmigiana cheese on top! She has a similar reaction to cheeses as me, and so we took some of the larger flakes off the top and put it to the side... just in case. A road trip is much less fun when your tummy is playing up!

I picked up a meat pie... a nice crunchy pastry that wasn't oily at all, which was filled with solid chunks of meat. My only complaint was that it could have been more gravy like... the meat was a touch on the dry side of things! But at least the chips were perfectly done!... but that pastry... yum!

Hot chocolate was decent, if nothing amazing... my daughter complains that Australian marshmallows are nowhere near as good as Dutch marshmallows... I agree with here, to floury on the outside and not with the right sort of squishiness. But, unlike her, I will still eat them or dunk them in my hot chocolates!

Coffee was similarly decent, but nothing to write home about!

The Experience

Roses Cafe was a great lunch stop in a regional centre... I would definitely return for the desserts and to try out the wealth of other options that we didn't manage to pig down! In fact, if I had to make an additional stop during the trips... or if we were taking a leisurely family trip, I would probably stop here again.... on the other hand, there was that other place that we had originally planned to stop off at...

I don't think I have ever seen a place that has service like that. So are the items in the display the ones they actually take out and serve you or are they just there to show you what they have? I've seen bakeries like that before, but not an actual restaurant!

This is a sort of deli style of restaurant. They are the ones that you end up eating! They are sort of more common on mainland Europe? At least, it didn't strike me as odd until you mentioned it! Now that I think of it... I don't think they are that common here either!

Haha, too funny!
