Hello guys, it's weekend today, and I brought you this delightful breakfast which you will all like. It's a very light food and good to always prepare it during the weekend when someone is off from work.
Today I brought to this palatable meal called Akara (a Fried Beans Cake) with Pap. It's a meal eaten in most parts of West Africa and Brazil. Though its origin is said to be from the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria but other West African countries and even beyond have been preparing it also.
Akara is also known as black-eyed peas fritters Acaraje, a very good and delicious, deep-fried beans cake made from black-eyed peas as I said earlier.
Akara Ingredients
Akara (Fried Bean Cake) ingredients are not very much and costly. These are the ingredients needed when going for Akara; black-eyed peas, blended pepper, sliced onions, salt, and seasoning cube as you can see below.
How to Prepare Beans Cake
When making Akara, you need to follow the procedures I will be showing you here for a proper result of a good fluffy fried bean cake.
First Step
Soak the beans for about thirty 30 minutes until the skin is swollen up. Then start to peel off the bean with your hands (the hard way) or with a blender and pulse for a couple of times to split the beans (the easy way). I am going to be using my hands to peel because there's no electricity to operate the blender.
Second Step
Earlier said that I will be using the local grind method to grind the beans. Mind you, you need to add very little water when blending or grinding the beans either you are using the local grinding or blender. Adding excessive water will result in flat and unpleasantly soft Akara balls.
You can now turn the blended beans into a clean bowl, add the blended pepper, sliced onions, and stir all together very well, then add season with salt seasoning cube of your choice and stir it together again. Note, when making Akara, a little salt goes a long way, so be careful when adding salt.
Third Step
You can now start to mix with a whisk, if you don't have a whisk to mix, you can use a wooden spoon to beat it, and will give the same result. You can even use the Local Motal and Pestle.
Fourth Step
Then put a frying pan on the heat and turn the groundnut oil into the pan then start to put the grounded beans with the mixture by spoonfuls into the pan as you see below.
Fifth Step
Fry till golden brown as you see here. The result is hot, fluffy, fritters perfect for pairing with Pap (Akamu), Bread, Hot Sauce, Custard, or just eat as it's, it's your choice though 😋🤗
