When talking about a good source of protein, all people will talk about is meat. But what if I told you there was a plant source you could get in the form of a powder, that will give you a good dose of protein, regulate your cholesterol levels, and give you 10 times more beta-carotene (which the body turns into vitamin A) than the average carrot? Yes people, a superfood like that exists, and it’s name is Spirulina.

source
Spirulina is an algae that’s bluish-green in color and grows in Asia, Africa, and Mexico, being used way back since by the Aztecs of Mexico and the people of Chad, Africa. Spirulina likes to grow in warm waters on the Alkaline side of PH levels. Spirulina has the ability to grow in harsh environments and spends its days floating atop the water, turning sunlight into nutrients and carbon dioxide into oxygen.
When people harvest the algae and turn it into a powder, we are able to consume the lovely health benefits this wonderful algae has within it. One of them being the high amount of protein found in Spirulina.
Spirulina has lots of protein in it, and you only need a teaspoon of this stuff to get 1 gram of protein! Phycocyanin, a protein complex found in Spirulina, is said to have anti-cancer properties as well as other health benefits.
To make matters better, Spirulina has lots of vitamins within it! You can find B-vitamins 1-3 in Spirulina, as well as lots of beta-carotene which is what your body turns into vitamin A. If that's not enough for ya’, Spirulina also contains Omega 3, Omega 6, copper and iron, all fatty acids and healthy metals for the body.
Spirulina also contains lots of healthy minerals. Potassium, magneesium, manganese and fiber are all minerals found in this algae. In fact, almost every single nutrient your body needs can be found in Spirulina, albeit some in small amounts.
If you want to lose weight or like working out, Spirulina is a great choice to add to teas, or work into smoothies. Along with it being a good source of protein, spirulina has carbs and helps burn calories by boosting the metabolism, all excellent benefits for keeping healthy. Spirulina is also good for losing weight.
Spirulina is also just good for your body overall, being great for the immune system, your heart. Spirulina also can lower your blood sugar and regulate your cholesterol levels. To top it off spirulina also contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
Spirulina is incredibly good for you, and I add it to teas and smoothies. Sometimes, I just take a spoonful shot in the morning.(Though this one is hard, since Spirulina tastes REAL bad raw).
So if you want to have an alternative protein source, eat something extremely healthy on workout days, or just take in those lovely health benefits, spirulina is it folks!
