Fresh Year in School, So Far So Good.

I'm back with a gist about my experiences so far as first year student of veterinary medicine.

You see, just like every other faculties or organization in general, there is hierarchy and we the fresher's are the least on the ladder. Even with being at the bottom of the rank we’ve been doing good. At least I have!

As a 100level student,of Veterinary Medicine I had 12 courses to learn for the first semester which include 3 departmental courses (vet courses) with the remaining course shared amongst other department as chosen by the Level Adviser (LA). The LA will decide in review with other officers like the Dean and HOD our various courses if it’s of relevance to the student’s build of knowledge.

Out of the 5 working days of the week, that is Monday to Friday, Wednesday was the day for my departmental classes and 1hr each was allotted for each course.

The departmental classes, even to my mates, are thought to be easy and we could very well verify that soon when the results of our first exams, the one we just ended November 5, will be out.

Whoever proposed the idea of test and examination in my school didn't consider us the students at all because during the last exam or 'texam' as it was called (because the university of Ilorin didn’t have much time on the calendar anymore for test and examination differently), students of various levels read and jacked like hard core.

Night studies were more intense and more people showed up at the library. One could say it was an equinox of reading. And here we are already at the second semester, there’s just as much work to do as the first. The previous course of VAN 101, VPH101 and VPH103 (departmental courses) has been replaced by VAN106, VAN 102 and VMD102.

In the faculty of veterinary medicine, there are several departments like department of anatomy and physiology. Here, the professors in this section teach course with the code VAN (veterinary anatomy) of any kind like 101, 102,106 etc. Department of veterinary medicine is another and here, VMD (veterinary medicine) courses are taught. There’s also public health department where VPH (veterinary public health) stands.
There is also in the faculty numerous facilities, the toilet- students and staff separate, ladies and gent separate.

The senate building that houses several other offices, the faculty officer's (FO’s) office included and the faculty secretary, assistant FO and financial accountant to mention a few. There’s also the Dean office and the assistant dean office separate, a general library and a special library for some departments.

Each professors with their own offices and the students having halls and classrooms to attend lectures. There are general halls like the infamous 100 level lecture hall, 200 level classroom, 300 and 400 level classrooms. The 500 and 600 level classroom are located at a different site from the faculty main area. There, there’s also the faculty teaching hospital where major clinical activity both lesson and work included are orchestrated.
Not to say that this is only area for practical learning in the faculty, there’s also facilities like the veterinary anatomy lab at the main faculty area. Microbiology lab and physiology lab are here too.

My first practical class was at the veterinary anatomy lab for VAN101. We were initially asked to observe the parts of a microscope before we’re told to view a slide with the microscope. The explanation of the steps to produce a slide was shown to us with the different equipment need for it.

It has been mostly a nice first year in school and a better recollection as I tell it now!
