Bumper beets

Since moving to Orange earlier this year, we have had a little more luck than we had previously in our sun-deprived garden in the inner-Eastern suburbs of Sydney. The soil here is also far more conducive for gardening. Having said that we have still had a lot of fails - mainly thanks to lack of regular watering and not being proactive in tackling pest problems.

The most successful harvest so far has been our golden beetroots.

First we harvested some leaves which went great in stir frys. They are very similar to spinach or silverbeet, just a bit more bitter in taste.

Then of course when the beets grew enough, they were awesome roasted in salads. They were great with some feta, mint (also from the garden - cha-Ching!) and roasted nuts and seeds. We usually bulk it out a bit by adding a tin of butter beans or chickpeas. Unfortunately I was so excited to eat these beetroot salads that I forgot to take photos. Sigh.

We’ve managed to misplace our bag of beetroot so we haven’t grown any more since this harvest. The kale is looking promising at the moment but we’ve got to try and stay on top of the pest situation.

In my country I have never seen this type of golden beet, only the purple one (I don't know its name) and the truth is that I have never tasted the golden one. Although I would love to do it. I loved your post, the images you used are excellent photographs. Thanks for sharing it. Blessings from Venezuela. :)
