Se trata de una planta arborescente de la cual se obtienen unas semillas del mismo nombre, a las que también se les conoce como bixa Orellana, achiotl, urucú, bija, bijol, rocú, rocón u onoto.

Son estas semillas las que se emplean a modo de condimento en la cocina, no solo por su agradable sabor, sino también por la tintura que se desprende de ellas y que sirve para teñir una gran cantidad de recetas culinarias tradicionales.
It is these seeds that are used as a condiment in the kitchen, not only for their pleasant taste, but also for the tincture that emerges from them and that is used to dye a large number of traditional culinary recipes.
En cuanto a su apariencia, esta especia tiene forma de pequeñas piedritas de color rojo, que suelen molerse y que dan un sabor terroso y picoso, con un toque ahumado y dulzón.
Regarding its appearance, this spice is shaped like small red pebbles, which are usually ground and give an earthy and spicy flavor, with a smoky and sweet touch.
En cuanto a las propiedades que se le atribuyen al anoto, encontramos que esta especia posee las siguientes:
✔ Expectorantes: gracias a sus compuestos antiinflamatorios y antimicrobianos, el onoto ayuda a descongestionar las vías respiratorias, combatiendo afecciones como el asma, la gripe, la tos, los resfriados, la bronquitis y la neumonía.
✔ Afrodisíacas: desde tiempos muy lejanos, esta especia ha sido considerada como un poderoso estimulante sexual que beneficia tanto a hombres como a mujeres.
✔ Astringentes: los compuestos activos del onoto favorecen la apariencia de la piel, sirviendo para exfoliar y retirar las células muertas, así como para hidratar y cerrar los poros.
✔ Óseas: ya que posee un alto contenido de calcio y de folato, el onoto resulta un aliado para la salud y la regeneración de los huesos y de los cartílagos.
✔ Anticancerígenas: gracias a su gran aporte de antioxidantes, esta especia previene el desarrollo de distintos tipos de cáncer, tales como el cáncer de próstata, de hígado y de garganta: ya que ayuda a controlar los niveles de azúcar en la sangre, el onoto es considerado un aliado contra la diabetes.

Antidiabetic: since it helps control blood sugar levels, onoto is considered an ally against diabetes.
